Chef, I'm just in the beginning of my own build that I'm trying to capture here in this forum. (a pair of '75 CB750's'). I have to tell you, I've learned more from your project posts here than I have from the manuals and YouTube videos I've been pouring through.

Thank you for taking all the time to post what you have, you are an inspiration.

Cranked and cranked until the battery died and nothing. No oil pressure. Gonna drop the pan, get the pump out and put in elans stopper, spring and seals, prime the pump, open the side oil passage and fill it with oil, add y oil pressure gauge and try again. That's the procedure I used the first time, just was hoping for an easy way out ;)

Thanks stev-o and tweakin. I am on vacation and in no hurry. She will be ready soon!

Cheesehead I checked out your thread, very exciting stuff. Don't overwhelmed yourself though. I finally have two bikes in the garage with a third one on the way. You can get easily distracted with even one bike, so take it a system at a time. I used the parts diagrams from cmsnl.com and restored it section by section. I never turned a wrench before this build, and I am almost done re-rebuilding her, about to start a cafe, and restore a cb450. Point is, I I can do it anyone can. Use hondamans book, honda factory service manual, and this forum. I wouldn't have made it this far without these guys!

alright.......on this glorious Friday January 3rd 2014, Yolanda lives again! now that I have your attention....let me pickup where I left off. I tried to get her to fire all day yesterday and nothing. wasn't getting oil pressure. too many shortcuts. nothing can be done half-assed! so after charging up both of my batteries last night this morning I dropped the oil pan, took out the oil pump, cleaned it, replaced the 4 o-rings, new spring and stopper from Elan, and primed it. popped it back in and put it on the side stand. opened the side oil passage there to put my oil pressure gauge in. before I sealed it up I used a turkey baster to pump in oil into that passage until no more would go in, then popped the gauge in place and righted her up on the center stand.

added oil to the tank, and gave her another go. still nothing. hmmm....I remember that with the pamco its easy to have the wrong lead going to the coils (ie I had them swapped so they wouldnt fire). tank off, switch the leads, tank on) hit the button and she murmured. kept at it for a little and she came to life! weaker sounding than I remember. hmmm, its an old engine maybe it needs to warm up. it idled at 1100. then I noticed the 2 and 3 pipes were cold. @#$%. its not the carbs, I know that for a fact. started farting around with the coils and didnt really get anywhere but the 2 and 3 wires were not producing spark. I went over to Fiona (78F) and stole her 2/3 coil with wires attached and popped it on Yolanda. tested for spark. golden! buttoned up again and VROOM she came to life. this time on all four cylinders!

then I couldn't give her any gas or else she would die. classic gas starving situation but she had plenty of gas......so I thought. its been awhile since I used the reserve setting on my petcock so I guess it was blocked or something. I tapped on all the carbs and tapped on the petcock, swiveled the lever back and forth a few times and she ROARED properly. idling now at 1000 when I want to. still need to do a carb sync (easy now that I know how to use the carbtune after I did it to the 78F).

took her out for a 36 degree shakedown run and my front brake is the piss. lever to the grip and I am still rolling. I bled it twice but not good enough. gonna try a vacuum bleeder as soon as I get it from my buddy Curt. I used the OLD K1 stock shocks and they are too tall and wayyy bouncy but I do not want to take the 78F apart until I have put a few hundred miles on Yolanda to make sure she is ready. last thing I need is TWO bikes in pieces  ::)

here is a video I shot today. I FINALLY have a freaking motorcycle that I can start with a button. been kickin it (literally) since April of last year, on two bikes too. the 78F starts if I jump the solenoid but the button doesn't work so its kick only. I am so elated and filled with joy. what a great way to start the year! it feels like forever but its only been 9 weeks since the accident. not bad. anyway, I hope you guys can manage to read the whole post, here is the video!

I am very happy glad you guys dig. Only thin is I'm using a pamco with the low ohm "ultimate coils" so I can't use one stock coil otherwise I would. I he two sets of stock coils. Gotta buy another "ultimate coil" from cb750supply. It's all good, part of life. In other news the cb450 should be here at noon tomorrow!

Wow, you got her done fast.   All I have to do to my bike this winter is pull the carbs and replace the carb body on number 4.
(I over tightened the jet and cracked the casting  ::) )  and I havnt worked up the motivation to do that yet!  You really did a
great job and she looks better than ever. Cant wait to see how the other 2 turn out.

thanks KC, and thanks again for the front fender. its gorgeous.
I just need to put my shorty shocks on, and get the chromed covers/new gaskets on

I finished bleeding the front brake and its stiffer than ever! BUT the front brake feels weaker than it used to be. is that possible? maybe I am used to the 78F with its dual dics...that one brakes quick. I can pull the lever and it feels like the lever is going to break before I stop. basically the rear drum feels stronger than the front disc...and that should not be possible. no air leaks in the system, OEM honda pads (only 5000 miles on them) stainless steel lines, DSS repro master cylinder (fresh out of the box). kinda stumped!

Sounds like air in the system, Chef. Some guys have used a different method to get the blast of the bubbles out - tape the brake lever pulled and let sit overnight. I have not done it, maybe of of the other guys will chime in about this.

We used to do that but usually it was to stiffen up a spongy lever. Chef reckons his lever is stiff, might it be that you are used to twin discs n now with only one you are seeing why we put the extra disc on there? On my recent build I taped the lever in for only 15 minutes and have excellent lever with twin discs and master cylinder designed for one disc but it works like a charm.

I am unsure. not really riding it until its confident. on one hand, the lever is stiffer than its ever been, stiff like the 78F, but weak braking power. I also noticed my brake squeak disappeared....as happy as that makes me, at least the squeaking means its stopping. my rear drum brakes faster. peculiar. I deglazed the rotor with 220 sandpaper and brake cleaner and just pushing it around and braking brought the squeak back. surely 5000 miles cant do in the brake pads? maybe it just needs to be brought back to life with riding and braking?

I also noticed the DSS hydraulic brake switch takes a lot of force to make contact. well after my braking power is applied it will activate the light. this is very unsafe. now I always use both brakes so the rear brake light comes on with a light tap...but the front brake should be activating sooner. I ordered a banjo bolt brake light hoping that right out of the MC will activate the mini pressure plate sooner.

I have a coil on the way but for now I put the 2 working coils back in the F, so I won't be tempted to ride Yolanda unsafely. a little stumped with the brakes but things will work out. rain for the next few days anyway so I won't be riding. mostly working on the cb450. thanks for reading

You've probably checked but I have to ask, there is no oil or brake fluid on the pads? Maybe give them a scuff up with the 220 as well, if that's all good then maybe the MC isn't working right seeing as you have to put a lot of pressure on the lever to act the light? Do you have another MC to try?

Hey Chef
Great job again!  Is that redundant?  As far as brakes,  I learned a couple of things the hard way.  I don't remember if your blog mentioned them.  I was told the only way to bleed these beasts is at the m/c.  Bubbles move up.  As far as pumping up the brakes or leaving them under pressure all nite, you don't want to squeeze the lever all the way.  Just bring it within an inch or so of the bar.  If you pull it all the way in, fluid will leak at the pin on the brake lever. It then leaks on to the tank.  I have proof.  If you already know this, it's good practice for me to force myself to remember.  Keep up the good work.

Pistons not stuck in the caliper is it?

I wouldn't suspect that because 5000 miles ago the caliper was cleaned, as was the groove, and a new seal was put in and assembled with brake lube and Dow Corning grease on the back of the pads. It worked just fine before. Pressure IS being applied just not as much pressure as I think there should be. Anything is possible. Once it get my coil and she's back on the road I'll be testing scuffing the pads/ trying new pads too. After that the piston is the only logical thing. The MC is a repro fresh outta the box from DSS . I got a new one after the first one received cap damage in the accident.
