1979 CB650 Turns over but wont start
« on: January 18, 2013, 09:32:38 AM »
I just picked up a 79 CB650 (pics to follow) Anyway, it ran fine until the guy I bought it off took the carbs off and replaced the float bowl gasket. He put the carbs back on, and now the bike doesnt start. I got it off him for a good price as its not running, and I assumed it would be an easy fix. But I'm stumped. The idle is adjusted and sparks good. The bike turns over no problem, but will not idle. The last owner said he got it to idle with some fiddling, but it would die without the choke. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this?? Any help is appreciated
Thanks

welcome to the forum. ehh...why did he decide to ufkc with the carbs? ::)  did you tell him to?  we have a thread about all the dumb isht PO's(previous owners) do to these bikes that we have to fix.
He messed with the carbs and now it doesnt run....pretty clear what you need to dig into  ;D
best place to start is with downloading the shop manual from the site or internet, and meticulously going through the 3000 maintenance procedures. you'll learn your bike and all its parts.

Welcome fellow British Columbia 650 owner!  ;) these are cold blooded bikes mine needs choke for a while before it will idle at all but once its warm its  fine. If you dont have a manual heres a good one for the 650

+1, before I even try to start mine, I pull the choke on full, pump the throttle 4 times to prime the engine with fuel and then hit the button.  Most of the time it fires straight up but still needs the choke for a good few minutes before it will run without the choke and then about 2-3km of riding before it is warmed up and will respond reliably.  It does sound like the PO has done a number on your carbs though.  Try winding it over for a bit then pull your plugs out to see if they are getting damp.  If they aren't then I would pull the carbs and go through them.  Just a silly thought, make sure you have fuel in the tank and the fuel tap is turned on and there is fuel getting to the carbs.  It wouldn't be the first time such a thing has been done.

POs do funny things sometimes so check even the most basic things. A PO of my very first bike used wood glue to attach the wrong air filter and it ended up clogging the filter and ruining the airbox. he couldnt figure out why it was running so rich!

Yup!  ;) easy fix but what was he thinking? It was a bike that a few brothers bought in highschool and all learned to ride on, and the youngest one didnt really think like the others i guess
