Go to Portland and take route 1 to Bar harbor from Brunswick if you're not in a hurry.  Traffic will be horrible that time of year anyways.. so the extra hour or so shouldn't make too much of a difference.  That way you'll see the other coastal communities (many better than Bar Harbor).

Portland has great food and drinks and would be a great place to stop for a night on the town.  Definitely check out the Old Port - lots of cool old bars, restaurants, and microbreweries all within like a quarter mile stretch.

The Park Loop Road in Acadia is awesome!  It's windy and twisty and mostly one-way so you don't have to worry about traffic coming around corners.  The road is also very good quality as it is closed during the winters. The views are amazing.  Be sure to take the switchback road up Cadillac Mountain as well - also a fun road with some great views! There is 25-35mph speed limit, but as long as you're not driving like a complete mass-hole  ;) you'll be fine.

Let me know what route you take though - I'm planning the same trip in reverse!  My brother goes to school at Hobart in Geneva on the Finger Lakes and my Dad's side of the family is in Pittsburgh. The final destination is Pittsburgh, but if I go out during the end of the summer, my brother will be at school for pre-season.

If I think of any other fun roads on your route through Maine I'll write back. Cool trip!

While I don't know any specific roads, I will offer up a fellow forum member and friend of mine if you want to PM him. His name here is Andy750 and he's been all around the world on bikes. He's living in Boston and has a wealth of knowledge to tap into.

Great trip and you will have a great ride no matter what route you take. I have been all over the Adirondacks/VT/NH and Maine and have some suggestions for you to consider:

1. Adirondacks  - Indiain Lake and Blue Mountain lake are great places to visit - amazing Adirondacks museum at Blue Indian Lake - highly recommend it.

2. I wouldnt take Rt 4 through VT - there are much better routes. Cross at the cool little town of Ticonderoga, NY (- excellent period diner on Main Street) and take take the Rt 73 to the Brandon Mountain Road - lots of fun!!

3. Either make your way over to Lincoln NH (Rt 112 is very good) and continue onto N.Conway via the scenic Kangamangus Highway or modify your route from Meredith, NH and go via Squam Lake (much quieter road with some great twisties along Rt 113.

4. From North Conway a MUST do is take Hurricane Mountain Road to Fryeburg - amazing!!! Then head to Norway and North up the Bethel Road - quiet, scenic good surface. Head for Rt 219E and then pass quickly through Augusta to Rt 17E which takes you to Rockport and the coast. Head North from here up the coast - perfect!

Good luck and if you come through Boston on the way home let me know and Ill put you up.

cheers
Andy

I was going to suggest you look up Andy for route suggestions (but he beat me to it).  He is the traveling guru! ;)
