No, I can't make Rockerbox this year. My 30th high school reunion is that day.

But in any event the 550 wouldn't have been ready anyway and I would have ridden the Goldwing.

More painting and assembly this weekend, but not as much as I hoped.

Saturday I painted my center stand and battery box and polished the fork lowers.

Sunday I painted the side stand and installed the rubber insulator disks back in the batter box. I installed the center stand and the front fork legs and temporarily installed the front wheel. Now the bike is self supporting as I work on other parts.

I intended to polish the clutch and generator covers. But just didn't have time.

Try a dremel with a brass brush attachment. I took one of those to a bicycle wheel a few weeks ago, and it was amazing. Started out looking like your wheel, looked damn near presentable 20 minutes later.

Make sure it is real brass as cheap plated brass brushes made of plated steel wire will wreck your chrome.

The front and rear are both going to be painted on this one. So I am not concerned with scratches since they will just give the primer something to stick to.

More polishing today. Did the alternator and clutch covers and re-did the cam endcaps and the breather cover.

I also painted the rear wheel. I'm not sure how happy I am with it, I need to clean up the hub and figure out what I am going to do with the spokes. I am kind of half assing the wheels. I should really re-spoke, but I don't have time if I want to try and have it ready to ride for the Relay Rally in the next few weeks.

I also started with the electrical installation.

Based on timing, what I still need and available cash there is no way this is ready in time for when the Rally gets to Michigan in a couple three weeks. So I am going to slow down a bit. My MG has been suffering from some neglect as I worked on the 550 the past few months.

So yesterday was devoted to pulling the carbs and manifolds on the MG to replace what (I think) was leaky gasket (the exhaust and intake are on the same side on the MGB and share a gasket). I am also using some of the skills I have recently acquired on the 550 to polish the tops of my SU's.

I did however find the time to drop the oil pan and inspect it and the oil intake strainer for any evidence of metal in the oil. I was very pleased to find no particles and that the screen was very clean. It would seem that the PO's were good about changing the oil.

OK, so 8 months later, I have finally done something. I spooned the old tire that I pulled from the roller last summer onto the spare rim from the basket case and threw it on the bike (as you can see from my avatar I only had a wheel and tire on the front). So now I can move it around easily.

That done I rolled it into the big garage and pulled the clutch cover. Off came the clutch and pressure plate for inspection and cleaning. All looks good. I also cleaned all the old gasket off the cover and engine case in preparation for the new gasket I bought last summer.

Today I will be putting the clutch back in, install the new gasket, put the cover back on, install the spin on oil filter conversion that I held onto when I sold the GoldWing, and then on with the filter and in with fresh oil.

Sadly still lots of work before I can try firing it up: the late wiring harness needs to be adapted to the early ignition key setup, the carbs need to be double checked and installed and I need to sort out a gas tank, although I think I know what I am going to do about that.

what oil filter are you using? are you using stock headers? sorry if you already posted

It's a Bosch 3330, I used the same filter when I had the adapter on my Goldwing.

I'm not sure on the exhaust. The 550F came with aftermarket header and a CB1100 muffler (go back a couple pages for pictures). The 550K didn't have an exhaust. I didn't even think to check for fit, but it should be ok since the filter is smaller around than the stock housing and the header I have goes around each side of the housing so you can change the filter without removing the header.

I personally prefer a least one muffler on each side to a 4-1. But I am also cheap, so may start with what I have and keep my eyes open for a cheap set of original chrome headers from a bike that already had aftermarket jardines on it.

No work updates, but I thought I would update my current thoughts on what I want to do.

Last summer I took a stab at painting one of the wheels that came with my bikes. I am not a huge fan of the painted rim look, but with the right paint and nice silver spokes it can look good.

But then I was doing some poking around on the on-line site for a bike yard in Illiois and an '82 FT500 Ascot single caught my eye. I pulled up the specs and it turns out that the Ascot uses the same 18/19 wheel size combo as most SOHC's. I had been trying to figure out how I might get alloys without dropping big dollars on Lesters (assuming I could even find them) and this may be the answer.

There are a couple bonuses too. The FT500 is rear disk brake and the swingarm is (per some measurements a fellow member did for me) the same length and width as my stock unit. Also, the forks are 37mm with an integral fork brace. They are longer than my 550 fork, but this might also work as I could slide them up the triples and use top mounted clip ons. One challenge will be fitting the master for the rear disk, but I can mock something up and have a pro weld it for me.

Overall look wise I had been originally inspired by Sean Barney's bike in Relay Rally 1 where he had fitted a vintage set of hard bags to his cafe bike. I really loved the look. Since then a couple other people, Frankenstuff most recently, have been building 'Cafe Bagger' bikes and I have been thinking about what I really liked about my now departed GoldWing and part of it was the comfortable riding position and the protection offered by the fairing.

With that in mind I am thinking that I want to add one of these to go with the alloy wheels and rather than a Cafe Bagger I am thinking 550 Super Sport Tourer. This is even the basic color I want, although I plan on gold accents down the center of the tank.

Pretty neat idea. Can you not use the rear set bracket from the Ascot to mount the rear master cylinder? Obviously you'd need the triples too for the front fork conversion as the larger diameter forks will be upset squeezing into a size 1 party dress...
