Sometimes you just get lucky. Lookey what I bought today!!
« on: April 20, 2013, 05:39:58 PM »
I went to the Skagit County Hotrod and motorcycle swap today. Not really seeing anything much in the SOHC4 world, I was about to leave when I poked my head into the last barn. There was this sitting there with a $600 price tag on it. I asked the guy what was wrong with it? He said nothing, it runs great. I was chatting him up a bit while poking around. Realizing that this 1976 CB550F Super Sport was in fantastic shape! It wasn't missing anything. The pods were installed by him but he had the full airbox assembly complete with intake rubbers in great plaible shape. He even had an instate title in his name. All the chrome is decent, all the parts are there except for one side cover, all the electrics work, it's never been laid over that I could tell.

I was intrigued but thought if I brought home another bike my wife will kill me. Of course if I can make a buck on it maybe she would give in. I called and told her about it. she said go for it. In Seattle I can clean it and tune it and turn around and sell it for $2500. Or sell my K and keep this one which I'm thinking of that.

I went back to the guy and he had a crowd at tht point. I weaseled my my way in and asked him if he could start it for me. He did, it ran pretty good, will need a carb clean but starts, runs, and idles fine. I told him "sold!" in front of everyone. Funny thing is I drove my honda civic an hour away to get to the swap thinking I am not buying a bike, I am not buying a bike! Well I bought a bike! I gave him the cash, he gave me the title and the keys. I'll take my trailer up tomorrow and pick it up. I can't wait! Talk about a kid at christmas time. The CB550 Supersport is my favorite SOHC4 and now I own one well 2 including ly CB550K. I have plenty of extra parts already.

I know, right? Deals like this are seomthing you read about other guys getting. With craigslist these days everyone wants top dollar and more for just about anything. Swap meets are where old guys like to sell stuff cheap. A couple of years ago at this same swap meet I got a nice set of carbs for my 550K for $20. I coulda bought a complete set of Bates hard saddlebags for $25. I passed on those and regretted it. I knew if I didn't buy this 550F I would've really regretted it!

I'll post more pics when I get it home today.

Do you plan a light restore? Looks to be in very good original cond.  Some times best to leave the cosmetic "patina".

Check the date of manufacture of the tires. If it's been sitting for quite a while, it may be time to start shopping for tires. Most likely came stock with Bridgstones.

Light restore is what I have planned. Maybe an oem seat cover, oem muffler, put the original airbox assembly back on, full 3000 mile tune.

I just got home and took a few more pics. The paint isn't as nice as the pics show but I was thinking of the Honda orange for the same year. I need new side covers anyway. I found some old registrations, been an eastern washington bike since 1982. No rust! I think it was from Iowa originally.

I love barn dirt. It cleans off nicely.

Frankenwiththelongassname makes the side covers.  The OEM mufflers were prone to rust and hard to find, but I was able to buy one on eBay for a reasonable price.

WOW!

After a 3000 miles service and a good cleaning of the carbs I finally took it out for a test ride this past weekend. All I can say is WOW! This thing is a blast. I swear it has way more power than my K model of the same year. I put on a new MAC muffler and it sounds pretty good. Starts right up, idles perfect, revs like a banshee. Did I mention everything works? Even the signal buzzer. For some weird reason the F feels like a smaller and lighter than the K. That can't be right?

I may keep this one and sell my K!

Sweet...keep the blue.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

This months issue of Motorcyclist Magazine has a CB750 Cafe on the back cover as an ad for insurance.

Too bad I could have not known this was going to happen in 1969.

Sweet...keep the blue.

its a toss up I like the blue too but I really like the orange. I have two new side covers from frankenbike and the paint on the tank has some decent blemishes so I have a blank canvas so to speak. Then my wife really likes my white K and if I sell that then I have to take her into consideration as well. Decisions!

I agree. One ride and it feels like a better bike than my K not sure why. The K is done and nothing left to do except swap over some of my more expensive uprgades like DYNA coils and ignition. I can make the F even better over the winter but its definitely rideable now. Decisions.......

Keeping both will not make the boss happy. Since I convinced her I would make some money by reselling it.
