the two problems are the original not finned regulator rectifiers blow up and then strand you, which is a common honda issue that happens in a lot of the same era motorcycles, very easy to fix just install a newer one from a later year. The next issue is the cam chain tensioners can fail with little to no warning and the motor is an interference design so it will bend valves. The fix for that is to replace the part (before it fails) with a manual cam chain adjuster from APE, pretty easy I have done the job myself on more then one superhawk. All in all less then $200 in parts the work can be done by any some what skilled hobby mechanic and once done you never have to look back, just enjoy the smiles and the heaping amounts of torque.

Wow,

How did I not see this forum post before.  Hello Portland!  I've met some of you before, mostly just in passing.  Looking forward to meeting more of you.  BTW, if anyone is ever looking for a place to wrench, I've got a small space.  Lets connect.

Currently in my space:
(2) 1982 CB650
(1) 1978 CB750
(1) 1978 CB550
(1) 1983 CB400T (hawk? not an four)
(1) Rokon (two wheel drive baby lol)

...oh, and one HD but we won't talk about that.

Hey Portland folks: does anyone have a spare field coil for a CB750? I'm trying to piece together a basket case I have, and have pretty much everything I need, but it appears that at some point someone robbed the three screws that hold it to the cover, and the wires going to it sheered off when it magnetized and tried to turn with the rotor...

I have a complete 78 Cb750 in pieces in my garage.  I can look for it.  I know it is there in 1 of 2 bins.

thanks! PM me if you find it. I can re-solder mine if necessary, but there's only a tiny piece of copper wire left on of the leads.

Anyone know where I can get a front end (triple tree-down) for a 550?

Attitude I can deal with, as long as I get a fair deal on the right parts  :D

I have the information 2nd (or 3rd?) hand from someone at work... he said he'd been by because I'd recommended it, but they were closed, and the Harley guys next door weren't *sure* but they thought everything went in a truck and the place was closed for good.  I hope they're wrong, too, but I honestly haven't had a chance to see for sure.

Matt can be a little shady, but he's always done right by me.

Not sure if he has an entire front end. I was in there this summer looking for a top triple & forks for my CB500. I had to dig through 4 boxes of stuff to find the tree. I only found one set of forks and they weren't any better than the ones I was trying to replace.
Had a #$%*load of XS650 stuff, tho.

I'll try to get out to Western this week and see what's what.

It used to be the Sunday and Monday where race days and so since back in the day most shops ran a local team they where out racing those days, everyone owners and mechanics and such. Now days its become just the way things are since very few local shops can afford full time race teams any more.

heh yeah...gotta know what your looking for, seems to me there was just a huge pile of assorted fork legs back behind the motors in that back building.....first time I went there, I was looking for a back wheel, there musta been hundreds of wheels just thrown in a pile and stuffed under the stairs...seemed a lot more organized last time I was there

most of western's stuff went to road hawk... the engines all went to the metal scrapper. some NOS stuff like bearings, etc Doc took. Gene took a handful of valuables, as the old man owed him money before he died, but most of the stuff like forks went to RH.

Business must not have been too good, most folks would sell, rather than shutting down and closing it out. Too bad...sure seems to be more than enough auto wreckers around, bike wreckers are really hard to find. I think probably what keeps RH going is their repair service...they're always wrenching on something, sometimes it's hard to get someones attention if you want to look thru the parts.  It's FOGGY today! haven't seen fog in a long time....
