Far enough out of town to where it's quite but close enough so it's not a hassle to run into town to get something, got great neighbors that also tolerate me firing up the bikes from time to time.

I am 5 minutes from all the major highways going out of the state, so when it is time for me to pull up stakes and leave for a state more favorable to my business, I am on my way.

Not much.  Live in a broke city, located in a broke county, located in a broke state.  Potholed roads,  #$%* neighbors located 8 feet away from me complete with barking dogs and pot smoking friends.  Can't afford to move.  Other than the mentioned items, the weather improved.
Just think when you do move it will be a move up!!!l

Wife is from MI too (Port Huron)  - somehow I knew what you are talking about before I checked your location.  Quite a shame what happened to Michigan.
Port Huron is pretty nice.  I live in one of the inner ring suburbs south of Detroit.  Need I say more ?  ;)

Kalamazoo area of Michigan is pretty good. We have lots of fishing lakes, hunting and some winding hilly roads. 35 miles or so from the Lake Michigan shoreline is a pretty nice way to waste a day also. Now about that thing called winter  ::) at least it keeps miles off old bikes and hidden away in barns  ;)

man 72 Yellow I guess I know how you feel and you are definitely old enough to have seen Detroit degenerate into what it is now.  I guess when I visit Detroit(I don't get over there frequently enough), I try to look at the bright side.  There is still world class, unique, art, music, and culture going on.  Also, the city is so open, you have a unique opportunity for a new and unprecedented kind of city to develop.  It is already happening.  I have travelled a bit, and there is no where else in the world like Detroit.  I hope both of us live long enough to see Detroit rise again.  I know it will.  All of this is easy for me to say, 'cuz I don't live there...just a different point of view.

So how is Deetroit after they declared bankruptcy?
Are the feds gonna lock up the mayor in a room and force him to take stimulus money like the banks and car companies?

My move to the country is "nice" too, 22 acres of silence cept from the occasional train sounds a mile away. No one is stealing sh!t from me like when living in Joplin and Ill occasionally leave a shed or shop unlocked without the panic feeling like I was used to having premove. And someday when the mj laws are approved Im eyeing the bordering neighbors 400 acres behind me..... 8)

Last year we travelled to Michigan for a wedding and due to construction got off 94 in downtown.  To get back on 94 I used 3 North, it was 11AM, safe time for travel, but what you see along the road is scary like.

Burned down houses and bared doors windows, the litter everywhere...

Yeah and look where it got them? ;) Dirty rotten bastards are profitable again.

You can own a gun in all 50 states, if you're a fraid of what a background check might find then maybe you shouldn't own one?

Whats good? I live on an acre lot backed up to trees. I'm on the line where urban meets rural so I kind of get the best of both worlds. However I do live in the meth cooking capital of the US.

Whats even better is I have a cabin sitting on 300 acres about 80 miles away and it's a GREAT ride to get there!
Great hunting and plenty of places to go shooting.
You CAN do great things...with enough beer.

What's "nice" about where I live?

well, we're slowly recovering from the recession, and the nice neighborhoods are managing to stay nice.  thank god.  there was a little ghetto seepage, but they won't last.  our block watch group just got someone evicted from our block for suspected drug dealing -- random people in their drive at all hours, sometimes bumping music - always being shady.  made complaints to city council who notified the landlord, blah blah blah -- it worked. :)

the winters suck, and are sometimes looooong, but the spring/summer/fall is generally great.  winter is good for saving money and working on projects - things there's just no time for during riding season!

we're close to lake erie, and there's a couple islands you can take the jetboat ferry to and get stoopid and see lots of women being wild+crazy.  The city isn't big-city, so it's not overwhelming.  there's no gridlock, it's generally safe to walk around wherever you want without someone trying to pickpocket you or mug you.

and we have TONS of great places to eat - we used to be "the restaurant capital of america"  because so many places liked using us as a test market.

we have a pretty amazing arts scene, tons of local musical talent, and always something to see and do.  an amazing, gigantic art museum which consistently ranks in the top 5 in the nation, and an amazing zoo.

which reminds me, the zoo does help make the winter awesome by hosting an event called "The Lights Before Christmas" which now runs most of the winter -- the whole zoo is decorated with christmas lights, and people walk around and take sanctuary from the cold in some of the buildings and concession shops where you can sip hot chocolate and eat gingerbread.

as much as everyone #$%*es about it, it's really a decent place to live.

One of the problems with Detroit is all the money is being spent in the downtown area (what isn't stolen)  The neighborhoods are left to rot.  The ghetto seepage that Mono speaks of has become a hemorrhage here.  Complaints to the city only exercise your lungs   My little block has only 8 homes, but 2 are empty.  The 3rd was quickly turned into a rental with no inspection as required.  All kinds of unsavory types eyeballing your house, car.  What a way to spend remaining years.  >:(

Had to work, Dave did, and had some twat on a cafe'd little Honda {360 i think} with firestones nearly become a statistic, side swiped an oncoming car and ripped off the bar end mirror, pretty close call i would say.... :o
