Well you did say the bike was in gear...... maybe the guy did that so no youngin would try to wheel it away.... most may think its an old bike that is stuck.  Then leave it when it won't budge. Or some leave it in gear incase they are afraid it may roll in neutral. ..... now go get!

clutch may be dry. Hence difficulty putting into neutral. I still wouldn't worry

I think he may be more concerned about the lack of compression?

Bikes that have set for an extended time tend to lose some but there are reports that compression will mraise after a hour or two of running time.

My post got lost :(

Stuck rings would account for lower compression, but good run for few hours would loosen them up.

For the price, I would be sitting in the driveway with cash in hand and trailer hooked to my truck  :)

okay, good to know...I didn't think I needed to be that paranoid. The bike was last registered in '90, so it's been sitting for a long time...but looking it over, I'd bet a couple hours worth of work and it would be running.

Paid the man, signed the paper work so it's all mine. Can't wait to get it home!

Whew! I thought I was about to come up there and smack the crap out of you for dragging your feet for so long about this bike! We all dream about a find like that, 4 pipes and at $300, a no-brainier to me. Glad you came to your senses!

Had nothing to do with coming to my senses...I just had to wait until I could actually meet the guy face-to-face and give him my money.

Oh, and the other bike is better than this one....SOHC4 bikes have a tendancy of finding me it seems....I haven't worked out details or price on that one yet, but I'll advise when I do.

$300 is free of charge for me.
You don't get much CB750 stuff, parts for 300 bucks. A complete bike is a really good deal even if it will cost you 1000-2000 to repair it back to nice condition.

We were getting panicky, over the years so many of these deals go south. as soon as you inquire about it the wheels start turning and often a friend or relative pops up wanting the bike and you are left a day late and a dollar short. Congrats on a good find.

PS if we lived closer, I'd roll in and take those unwanted accessories off your hands. Then you would have an even  cheaper bike!

No need to panick! Living in a climate where you can only ride for half the year makes motorcycles less desirable to the masses...along with sky high insurance rates. Its the reason I can seemingly pick up bikes here for a song compared to other parts of Canada and the U.S.

Oh, and I haven't given up on the accessories yet...the Shoei bags will 100% be staying...not sure on the Vetter though!

Still waiting to get more info on the other bike available...but that might be a little while.

Well instead of reading anything on this entire thread i think i can help you. Just give me his phone number and I’ll ask him all sorts of these smart sounding technical questions to make sure the bike is in good working order to re affirm you this is a stellar deal. i mean for $300 anyone in the right mind especially an online community of similarly shared interests would buy this bike and steal this deal in a heartbeat because your dragging you booty for no reason. i mean ooppss something is wrong so sell stuff that you dont want on the bike or like with all the money you saved you could rebuild it  :)

so to help out and be a productive honest member of society what’s that guys number so i can check that bike over for you

Finally had time to drag the bike home on Saturday. Bad part was the PO lost the keys...so I've ordered a set of keys for the bike online, which are waiting for me to be picked up this coming weekend. However, I got impatient and brought the ignition to a locksmith today to have one made. Just got the call saying it was ready, so I'm going to check out the electrical, etc. today and see what works and what doesn't.

Pictures to come....

As for the other bike I wanted to pick up, I just don't have the space....which is unfortunate. I need a bigger garage!

Got my key and threw on an old battery to see if the electrics worked. All electronics work - awesome. Added some fuel, turned on the petcock, kicked it three times and it roared to life. I shut it down after about 10 seconds or so because I didn't feel comfortable starting it prior to an oil change...but curiosity got the best of me.

The thing has sat untouched for 23 years, and it started right up. These bikes rock.

Wow. You, sir, lead a charmed life! I've lost more than one good deal like that because of flaky sellers and the planets not being lined up. Congratulations on your success, will look for updates as things progress.

I got a new battery for it and actually got it to idle today...tach doesn't seem to work, so I'm not quite sure what rpm it idled at, but it actually idled quite nicely.

Now, I made a rookie cb750 owner mistake...I checked the oil after the bike had been sitting for a very long time. It seemed nearly empty! So, I added a fair bit of oil and checked the dipstick...perfect! Long story short, oil was spewing everywhere....Now I know to check the oil only after the engine is warm on these bikes. Oops!

Other problem I noticed was that my gas tank seems to have a leak, which is a bummer. Going to have to get that resolved before paint...
