Also, David Silver Spares sells a replica for $200 - has a plastic pan but looks pretty good.  I almost got one because my 550 foam was deteriorating but I was able to make it work with just a new seat cover.  Good luck!

Took some 00 and 0000 steel wool to it tonight and really happy w the results. The oxidation and grime came off. Still needs more work and final polishing but really making progress. Yea!!!

I like the look of the slightly stepped 78 seat, but being tall I don't know how well it would work for me. With the flat original style seat I had to remove the strap because it was right where my butt needed to be.

Your cold start issues are almost certainly plugged up idle jets. Been there. Done that. lol My bike used to be a real pig to try and start and would bog coming off the line and required lots of feathering the throttle to get it to take off smoothly. I went through the carbs and found that 2 idle jets were completely plugged and 1 was partially plugged... Well there's your problem. lol

Your bike looks like it's, overall, in very nice shape.

Cbpunk.  I have the original seat off my 76 550k.  It's in great shape with a couple small nicks and a little surface rust on the pan.  I'll send you pics if you are interested.  PM me

I think the 78 seat will fit the 76 but there will be a bit of a gap between the seat and the tank.  A 78 seat will also look "big" on a 76

I have a 75 seat on a 78 tank and it rubs up slightly against the paint on the right hand side of the tank

Got some chrome trim on tank tonight  as it was missing and the rough edge and paint cracking needed the finished look badly. Only 6$ and 5 min.

Looks like a version of my K5 750.  Saddleman seat and mini apes.....put on the bike when it was new in 75.  Everybody wanted to be Peter Fonda in Easy Rider.....mine even had a set of lowering blocks on it.  Good luck and do all the 3K maintenance.  It may help prevent problems on down the road.

Bl56,
true the mini apes and cruiser seat try to make it easy rideresque lol but we all know these bikes should never look like that lol. Plenty out there at the time to pick from if u wanted a chopper or bigger cruiser , guess Honda just wanted to appeal to bigger market.

So had bike out for 4th ride ever today and outta nowhere it stalled doing 45mph. Pulled over and tried restarting it until I drained battery. Battery is now charging at home w 1.5 trickle charger. Says overnight charge but will I get anywhere w it in 3-4 hours ? Any ideas out there as to what happened ? It's now sitting on the side of road w a cover on it waiting for heavens to open up. Strong  tstorms coming. Ugh. Help !

Did you try to kick it over? Sounds like a charging system woah. It is commonly known for these bikes.

Tried to but nothing. Only few kicks but not sure if the kick starter works. 2 hours into charge. Gonna try after another hour or so. No rain yet...

Why would it stall like that when it was riding fine ? Strange.

If the bike slowly loses revs then dies, it's likely fuel related. If it just flat quits mid-ride then it's electrical. Charging the battery is unlikely to help. Make sure you have a tow company number in your phone to drag it home for you.

Likely culprits are the stop-run switch and the power wire to the points.

Crazy it started right up and ran fine for the ride home. Who knows.
