Ummm, yeah I do care how they like it in Oz and the Nederland, (and no I am not part of the great American "we"), because they get good bikes where the riding position is not designed to mimic a Harley Davidson.

Speaking for foreigners, I don't give a hoot, what you as the whole group or/and as individuals think or feel. The best oil is Mobil anyway.

the 750 was a wide hipped farm girl, the 550 didn't have the panache of the 500.
the 400 and 350's were nice wee bikes but lacked any guts. In my humble foreign voice I miss my 500's but the 650 motor is much better(in standard form).

ride what you like, they have all got there shortfalls and good points.

and yes I have been drinking.

Fortunately Honda DID give a hoot and made their bikes different for different countries and riding styles.
What they could have done better?
The rear shocks were worldwide known as bicyclepumps, replacing those with better quality items improved the bikes as a whole.
But to be honest, even after all these years the SOHC series are still known for their overal build quality, and even Honda won't have expected to have so many of these still on the road on a regular basis!

The Phillips Head Screw, a real PITA!
Why not allen screws from the very beginning?

Torx even better (developed in 1967 by Camcar Textron). The tool get better grip when apply torque.

Allen screws yes, but Torx are POS. The Jeep production for some reason uses torx head in many places and they are major PITA. Like the roll cage bolted in with Torx - you dont stand a chance, the wrench will get chewed up and bolt stays.

While working on the jeep, I had sockets from local HW store and they would replace wrench without question - I replaced the gd torx 4 times and gave up and started grinding. Allen head is much better.

Enclosed chain - My Benly was supposed to have one but back in the day they were such a PITA that the first time a tire was changed the chain guard was pulled off and thrown away. they are very hard to come by now.

I use to own a 1983 HD FXRT and that had an enclosed chain. They last for a long time but suck when maintaining your bike.

OK, my experience of torxs is the smaller screws. T15-T30 screwdriver tool. Never had a problem. Mostly industrial robots with the control system.
Anyway, allen heads should have been fine :-)

Once the socket head cap screw (Allen head) was invented, why would anyone use a Philips head or a Torx? It is hard to strip a SHCS and it is easy to strip the others.

Before you correct me, I said hard not impossible. Read it, read it again and relax. I don't need any hate mail telling me about "the time you stripped one". We've all done it but I stand by the fact that it is harder to strip one of these.

Some good opinions here and interesting to read through all the thoughts.....Did anyone else notice that Lucky mentioned having a twin brother? That could be a new topic unto itself.
I am also still pondering the notion of a V twin single overhead cam on page 1, but I write it off as a mis-statement by Lucky or his twin. Carry on....

Finding a Robertson on a car or bike is always a sign of bad things, robertsons are pretty much used for wood screws. As soon as I find one I always have to ask myself what else did the PO cobble together...

For a chaincase to be oilbath, it must be fairly oil tight. So there could be chain covers that just keep chain cleaner and oil from dirtying the bike,that are not oil bath.
The latter is common on dutch bicycles and ladies bikes..

on the small honda"s..the chain /cace..and thain wheel stays on the svingarm..when take the hweel off..its a easy turn to take it off..there are a rubber/tap konneksion from the hub to drive train..

bad that honda not used this for the bigger bikes..in kombinasion vith closed chaincase
