I just read this thread from start to finish, it makes me very happy.
I have a severely trashed and thrashed 500 which is going to need similar treatment!

The head and barrels are being put on a Linishing Machine and being linished.
Wikipedia states Ianishing is -
Linish is an engineering term that refers to the process of using grinding or belt sanding techniques to improve the flatness of a surface.

Question - I've bought a generic pack of CB500 gaskets, it includes every O ring and seal needed for the engine does anyone have a comment good or bad about these? Any assistance would be appreciated.

the gaskets will be fine mostly except for those formed o ring ones are sometimes too thin and don't crush and seal properly,with the rubber gaskets in the well cleaned groove they should sit proud about 1/3 of their thickness?some might be almost flush which isn't enough.

Thanks Dave I'll pay particular attention to your comments and check out the o rings for thickness.

Finished stripping paint off the tank and right side cover (I'm still looking for a left side cover).

Cover with adhesive applied ready for paint, get Candy Gold mixed tomorrow and into 3 rattle cans.

I have the red packaged seals. No update on them as the engine is waiting for the frame to return.

I'm thinking of painting the 500 in original Candy Gold.

To the gurus -

Q. Did Candy Gold have any metal flake in it? I can't remember.

Candy gold was a 3 pack paint
(1) silver base

(2) colour tinted see through paint--more you put on darker it gets

(3) Laquer

BryanJ thanks mate, but I've changed my mind and am going old school with a candy apple red metal flake.

So much for the original CB500 colour, I never did like Honda's colours all that much. I had a red Honda 750 '74 model.

I wanted the 500 to really pop and I trust it will.

I've started on the right side cover (the only side I have for the moment), back to bare plastic and applied 2 coats of adhesive and the a coat of gold as a base for the red.

Then a mix of red flake and 2 pack clear will be applied when I spray the top coats.

Started the tank cleaning and rust conversion process. Using the POR15 tank kit , so far so good

Need to give the tank another go with the Metal Ready, I'd used some on other parts (when painting)

Right side cover has been done up to the spray filler (had some deep scratches); I'm going to wait till tank's ready for paint and Left side cover arrives.

Right engine case polished, more polishing still needs to be done.

Finalise gearbox tomorrow.

Finished POR15 sealer in the tank, has to sit upside down for 4 days.

Seeing I'd done the full rust treatment I figured I'd treat the underneath side of the tank and paint it with the POR15. Came out well, I'm pleased with the result.

Also spent more time polishing the right case, nearly there, just a bit more.

But I didn't get to the gearbox at all, there's always tomorrow.

8 new Primary rubbers, foot peg springs and 4 screws for the front mudguard arrived today from CSMNL - hoo-ray, now I can start on putting the engine together.

Foortpegs are together

Spent a few hours this arvo polishing the left case, it was in a bad way- scratched, filthy dirty. Here it is after 80, 120, 320 and 600 hundred grit and a bit of buffing.

Barrels and head back from Linishing tomorrow.

It finally feels like a major step to this 500 coming together and being ridden again.

More polishing today, after I watched some you tube polishing alloy cases I got a lot better at it, funny that.

After the tank had sat for 4 days as per POR15 instructions, cleaned the outside ready for some bog and sanded the underside ready for 2nd coat.

Dave thanks for the encouragement regarding the little foot peg springs.

What brand do you suggest for a cam chain or what brand not to get?
