The Quest for Brakes and Suspension: GSX-R Treats
« on: November 02, 2013, 04:07:46 AM »
So, somehow, while I was catching up on my thread, I deleted my build thread using Tapatalk. The joys of technology and connectivity.

This is where the bike stands going into winter 2013:

1972 CB750K2

Engine:
Rebuilt with all new gaskets & seals
836cc Wiseco Big Bore Kit
Web Grind Cam
New valves and springs
New Cam chain and tensioner
New tappets
Stainless hardware kit

Dynoman pod filters
New carb isolators & clamps
Yoshi style 4 into 1 exhaust
New Motion Pro throttle cables
Dyna 2K Electronic Ignition
Cycle-X points cover
Dyna 3 ohm coils (w/resistors)
New plug wires/NGK iridium plugs
New Motion Pro clutch cable
Custom oil tank & lines

Frame:
Eastwood Chassis Black 2K ceramic paint in Satin
Shaved mounting tabs
Removed center stand & bracket
Gusseted and smoothed
Welded kick-up tail section
Bronze swingarm bushings
Tapered steering bearings
Dresda style boxed swingarm
New lower shock bushings
Cycle-X billet triple trees
Tarozzi modified clip-ons

Gauges/Electrical/Lights:
Rewired bow to stern
Custom electrics box
Rick's solid state reg./rect.
Earth-X Lithium Battery
5-3/4" Bates Halogen Headlight
Joker Machine Taillight
Acewell digital tach./speedo.
Innovate Wideband O2
External oil pressure gauge
New start solenoid & fuse block

Suspension:
New Cycle-X early style forks
New fork caps
T-Kat fork brace w/satin powder
New fork seals & gaiters
Slightly polished fork lowers
Progressive fork springs
Hagon Slimline rear shocks

Brakes:
Dual disks lightened &drilled
New Tracker style master cylinder
New stainless lines & alloy tubing
New stainless caliper pistons & seal
New EBC brake pads
New bleed valves & caps
Calipers powdered satin

Wheels:
Excel front 1.85"x19" alloy rim
Excel rear 2.25"x18" alloy rim
New tubes & rim strips (duh)
New wheel bearings
Powdered satin spokes
Avon Roadrider tires 3.25"/4.00"
Slightly polished hubs front & rear

Bodywork & Upholstery:
'78 Supersport Tank
Muscle Car hood pin gas cap
House of Kolor Maroon Metallic
Eastwood Satin Black 2K accents
Custom Corbin-styled seat & pan

After screwing around with the early style frontend, I've decided to swap in a GSX-R frontend:

Had to pull off the rear rim, which will be now used on the front, so I swapped on a new excel 3.5" x 18".

My significant other wanted to have a lazy rainy day at the house, so I laced this bad boy up while we were watching a movie. Just a note, Buchanan's 7-8 gauge stainless spoke kit requires some force when installing the outer spokes.

New rubber hopefully goes on today

I'm going to be running a 140-18 on the rear and a 110-18 on the front.

I installed the bearings in the custom bolt on hub, so that I can send it out Monday to Buchanan. Since the hub was bare, I just tossed it in the oven for 20 min...easiest bearing install ever. I don't mind lacing and truing, but this puppy's gotta be all inside lacing and looks to be more than a three beer job.

I'm going to swap out to a one off cafe tail

Some mockup. It was kinda depressing pulling the other frontend off.

Out with the old. I'll take it down to the machine shop this coming week to have it lengthened.

I'm thinking of removing the anodizing and putting a slight polish on the forks. Not sure how the remover will interact with the fork seals :-/

That is a really good job, I remember lookings at your build thread here and there. What is making you have to inside lace the other hub, never heard the difference. The shoulder or width of the hub, angle of spokes?

What are you doing with the other front end stuff?

Last question I swear, you really have that tug boat?

The spokes won't clear the rotor/caliper assemblies without inside spoking. I've only ever seen it done on choppers where they run a tiny hub and no brake. The other frontend is leaning against my bench. I don't know whether to part it out, sell it outright, or throw it on my cb450 project. If someone were to be interested in it, they can send me a PM. It wouldn't be cheap, FYI. It was cheaper to put on the gixxer frontend than it was to build up the stock one!

I'm a Merchant Marine by profession and I operate offshore tugboats for six months out of the year. Mainly, I push around 500' oil barges with a big 6,000 hp tug. It's a pretty cool gig and it gives me tons o time to muck around with old bikes ;)

The inside spoking makes sense that you say that, would definitely open up a tight space with what you could save on either side.

Yeah it is funny how building our front ends can add up like that. Especially now with how much info is out there on exactly what you need for the gixxer parts

Today I installed the bearings. I'm leaving the lower race in there, since the all balls site specifies that they're the same bearing. There's on 2k miles on it. Knocked out the upper race and installed the new one. Mocked up how everything is gonna sit. I'm not all that impressed with the look:

The upper race sitting proud on the old frontend wasn't a problem, but on this, it just looks ugly

Hmmmmmm....

On Elans build, i made a dust cover for it out of billet aluminum..you need to know how high its sticking past frame..
If you measure the 2 locknuts, then subtract about 1 mm, then counterbore the top tree, they will, disappear.. Then shorten top or build dome nut.

Frank, the counter-boring idea I like. I was thinking of machining the 750 dust cap into a locking nut that fits on the gixxer stem. Essentially, it would replace both the stock lock nuts.  I'll take a look at the counter-boring idea when I get down to the shop tomorrow.

My ALL BALLS top bearing stood proud too so I made an aluminum bearing cap.
Anodized black it looks great.

In case anyone was wondering about fitting a 140 sized Avon Roadrider, here it is on an early style hub and a Carpy swing arm. 140/70-18, 3.5" Excel, 530 chain. Chain clears, as does the brake stay.

It's gonna be a week before the tooling shows up for my stem for the swap so, I went ahead and played with a little glass today.

My buddy Matt (whom works with composites in the boat building industry) swung by with some fiberglass scraps. He brought me some really cool stuff called tri-axial cloth, which I super strong. I used four layers of chopped matte, with two layers of the tri-axial sandwiched after the first layer of matte. The tail is wicked strong, bub. I'm going to throw a layer of bondo over the whole kit and caboodle and it should be ready for upolstry :)

I have to make a public statement on this front; Buchanan's has some of the best people to deal with. I've been on the phone with them three times dealing with the front hub, with three different individuals...everyone has been amazing.

I've gone as far as I'm gonna go with it. I'm hoping to have the whole thing upolstered in the same fashion as my old one. If that is not the case, and I have to paint it, I'll need to do a little more work. That is some tedious work.
