Library or Forum?
« on: January 25, 2014, 04:05:45 AM »
I think that the admonition to potential new members to look before asking a question that may have already been answered is intimidating. Having a potential new member ask a question that has already been answered somewhere in the catacombs of the site provides an opportunity to welcome the new member and make him feel at home. So, is the site a sterile library   :-\  or a place where CB750 owners can come and join the party?  ;D

I say the second, many people just show up once and ask one question to never come back - and they are always treated well here.

Not always.  Recently a newbie asked a fairly simple question and one response was "next time, get off your ass and look for it".

WTF? I couldn't believe it.

+100 Stev-o. But that particular member, is always truculent to posts. If your put off by a post, don't read it, I say. You have no obligation to respond, and do have an obligation to respond politely if you post. My opinion.

Many folks find this forum and don't know it's hidden secrets. Maybe the FAQ should be more prominent, but then again, it turns it from a community to a library. I like the community aspect. I'm as guilty as anyone of posting a quick "help" because it's not always clear from manuals or posts what the right way is, or perhaps, there are greater insights from experience.

It's a case of Wisdom versus Knowledge. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit a salad.

Long live the forum!

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. But Stev-O, everybody was nice to you the next day!    ::)

But gentle ribbing aside, I like that this is a civil discourse. It's unusual for the internet.

I saw that to Stev-o. IMO that was uncalled for. Everyone is a rookie here at one time or another. Heck Stev-o even with your almost 15,000 post your were a greenhorn back in 2009.
The only thing that bothers me at times are people with there first and only post coming here and promoting and talking up their business or trying to made some quick cash by pedaling off a few parts they have stumbled across somewhere.

Not always.  Recently a newbie asked a fairly simple question and one response was "next time, get off your ass and look for it".

I think this is both. I was when it was only an email list. When I want to see how something is done I do search. A lot of guys have posted "how to" posts with pictures and narrative. These are very helpful. You will also find that there many be more than one approach and you find one that both fits your need and skill level.

I have been to forums for other vehicles and they are really crap many times. Yes we have some people that tend to be high handed when giving and answer, but their information is valid.

Pete, it was a forum that over time has amassed a Library of knowledge over  time. When my Dyna was crapping out I found it was common. I also found the Pamco and bought one, and it works well.

It's true that some members can be high and mighty, and short, abrupt and downright rude responses would I imagine put a newcomer off. It's a shame when those new members don't realise that post-count doesn't necessarily equate to knowledge and experience, or even a helpful attitude. But if they hung around for long enough they'd be able to recognise the good guys (who are by far the majority) and disregard the others.

I belong to several bike forums, but this is by far the most addictive. We should all be very proud of what we have here. A vast library of knowledge, and genuine experienced folk always willing to help out if they can. It is, I believe, on the whole an extremely welcoming community. I am embarrassed when new members are treated with sarcasm and contempt, fortunately it doesn't happen often. With a membership this large, you're bound to get the odd prick now and then.

I was treated like an imbecile for my first few posts (and still am)by a knowledgable old timer. Thankfully my needs were great and I brushed it off. That same old timer hasn't changed at all but I tend to not respond to his curtness.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

some new comers just expect an answer without introducing themselves and as 70cb750 said just dissapear again,if theyve asked a poorly constructed or unclear question on the first or second post that also makes it harder to resist a bit of skylarking?once it all settles down and its clear what the question is it gets answered properly, its a great resource once youve passed the initiation!some turn out to be non hackers though?

I don't know if it's just me but I find the google "custom search" not nearly as good as the original search engine this sight had. I don't know what happened to it or why it can't be repaired but I thought it worked a lot better than the google option. I agree that someone should check out previous posts but it's real easy to get lost because there is so much info available. I've asked questions that have already been asked numerous times but it was mainly because I was in a hurry an wanted an answer asap and fortunately I was treated well by those that responded.
