tank bags - opinions wanted please
« on: March 04, 2014, 12:10:49 AM »
Hi there
I have a CB750 K2.  I'm tossing up the idea of getting a tank bag.  I have never had one before and don't even know if it carries enough stuff to be worthwhile.
Has anyone used one and liked it or hated it.
Also if you give them the thumbs up, what brand do you use.

Thanks for your time
Scott

I have used  a tank bag on my FJ1200. I got it from Aldi. It also came with a bum bag and a smaller quick detach bag. They can hold a fair bit but they are most handy if touring to stow stuff you need as you're going along, camera, tablet, bum fodder etc.

G'day Scott, I just went to try and find it but couldn't. From memory I'm pretty sure it was magnetic. I'll have another hunt for it tomorrow. I found the detachable part which is actually a good sized back pack.  Ladies need somewhere to put their hand bag so it was handy for that as well.  Wife and I toured on the FJ and we used the tank bag as well as an RJays expandable gear sack.

pretty obvious but keep only your light and soft stuff in your back pack,if you have a prang you dont want sharp hard or pointy things in it!

Used one for years, the strap buckle type as there weren't magnetic types back then, one of the most useful devices ever as you could just unbuckle it and take it with you.  Still have it somewhere...Larry

I didn't use one on the 2012 rally but did buy one for the 2013 run.  Now I won't travel without one.  I found a perfect sized one at rockymountainatvmc.com.  The model I have is "ATV Logic Tank Top Bag.  Paid around $20 for it.  It is held on by two elastic straps and a loop that goes around the tank spout.  I know its for an ATV but it works great on my F1.  Can be removed in seconds.  I hate carrying anything in my pockets when I ride so I put my wallet, camera, cell phone, maps, charger and other small items in it.  If I had to walk away from the bike, I just popped the bag off and carried it in with me.  The clear map pocket also worked good.  I made up several maps of different sections of my route and would slide them in as I needed it.

I bought a "lot" of three or four soft tank bags and saddle bags a few years ago that were missing the straps and buckles.  Frankly I don't know how I got along without them before.  (I made new straps and fitted buckles to them.)
The tank bags I have are an Eclipse, An RKA, and a couple others I don't recall brand, saddlebags are Fieldshear (sp).

I recall the RKA is expandable and is probably my favorite, even if the zip off side expansion bags are missing. The Eclipse is nearly as nice and gets the most use along with the RKA.

They either have a firm foam base or a rather thick fur to protect the tank, and have quick clip buckles and straps to hold them on and make it easy to tote away with you.  Most have a map pocket for the top.  Old school perhaps in these days of GPS, but it works well with maps or written instructions.  (We are still allowed to write with pen and paper, aren't we?)

Not quite the storage capacity of a Goldwing.  But, it gets far closer.

I have two, both magnetic, one small one and one large. I am a big fan, although you need to be careful putting them on and off so as not to scratch the paint.

On long trips the larger bag, which has a clear front can hold maps etc. It provides an easily accessible place to put a wallet and gloves and some basic tools and things you might want access to without needing a key or having to get off of your bike. Also, the large on is expandible, so if you have cafe bars of clip ons that keep you leaned forward, the full bag can serve as a chest rest for long stints on the highway.

I built one with a pocket that holds onto the gas cap.  The front is a buckled strap and the rear is still in prototype after only 9 years.

I put water and some tools in there to keep some weight forward.  And gloves for changing weather.  The map window shows far more area than the GPS; I need both to find my way around.

I use a tank bag. I keep all kinds of stuff in it. Comb, tie tack, a feather for a hat ( i don't have a hat, just the feather), nacho cheese, mittens, and an extra set of wiper blades. mines magnetic so I don't put thumb drives in there, or get it near the plate in my head.

I like mailbags better as they are more out of the way but they kind of ruin the 2 up aspect of travel

I use a heated tank bag for my nacho cheese and my tie tacks I leave in my breast pocket due to the constant need to change ties on the highway....

I used Motopak GT-Mini http://www.motopakluggage.com/gtmini.html. Holds waterproof gear, water, camera in the sidepocket for easy access, has an earphone port if you require to listen to GPS/music. Its magentic and will stay on in very heavy wind (I know this for sure ;). Its expandable (see pic).

I have also used a larger Chase Harper tank bag which buckles in. Carries a lot more stuff; clothes etc.

This setup was for 2-up camping for 2 weeks. Too much stuff before I learned to pack properly ;)

good luck
Andy

If he scared to use the magnetic type as I do lots of metal work and the last thing if want is bits of metal sticking to the magnet and then fitting the bag to my tank and scratching my fresh paint.

I made one back in the day - they were not available in my country.  We hahd one for the France trip and I carried soft stinky french cheese in it with other things, that was very potent smell after few days on the road  ;D

Did not get one in States yet but I need to.

I favor the magnetic bags. Good ones do not move. The strap on ones do move and sooner or later will scuff the paint. My 20+ year old Motoline bag has sat for over 50,000 miles on my CBR1000F tank and 10's of thousands of miles on my other bikes and there is nary a scuff or scratch. Some of that is a testament to the quality of Honda's paint. A little care must be taken to keep the bag and tank clean. All I ever do is wipe the tank and bag with a cloth at gas stops. And yes, you don't want to set your magnetic tank bag in a pile of swarf and then put it on the bike. I never go on any long trips without it. Another big plus with the magnetic bags is that they are easy on and off. Of course that can be a negative if you leave the bike unattended. But the strap-on style isn't much better.
