Got notice today from my new bestie (no, but seriously folks...a certain person on this forum has gone above and beyond for me.) that my jugs and pistons are on their way, as well as some other goodies he had that I needed. Yay!

Haven't really done much lately. I put a few more coats of high temp on the exhaust pipes and "baked" them with a propane torch. I made a template and marked my rotor to drill but honestly I'm not sure what kind of a bit I would even have to use and my 1961 shop smith is O.O.C. at the moment. Needs a new control sheave assembly :-(

I'm trying to decide exactly how to go about washing out the bottom end without taking it apart. I just want to clean it up with everything sitting in it and then lube it with oil/assembly lube all together. I know the builders will say that's evil but I think it's possible to do a good job. I guess we shall see. I'm not there yet. I'll worry about that once I have the parts to get it back together.

I wish I was making more progress but I just started working again and it's not a very well paying job, unless you're a teenager... :-( The job market's just not good here.

Drop the oil pan, and flush the lower end with Diesel fuel (or Kerosene). I like Diesel, but it stinks pretty good. It's a solvent and lubricant all in one, readily available, and perhaps you have a neighbor that can filter it and run it in their machine?

If you want to simply clean the cases on the outside, then Kerosene is a pretty good and cheap solvent. Simply fill a spray bottle and go to work. Afterwards, I like to use Denatured Alcohol to clean the Kero or Diesel from the exterior so that I can paint. Works pretty good, sloshy/messy, but with some cardboard down and some cloths, not too bad.

You must be a helluva guy to have friends like that. Surely it's deserved

Yeah, I've got the cases still cracked (I need to replace one bearing shell set on account of a scratch) and would like to clean those innards out. Then I'll do some light lube in there. It's not bad as is but I'd like to get the old oil and stuff cleaned out.

The only other "major" things I need to do on the engine are: Get the head surfaced, Get a cam chain and new rollers, check the primary chain wear and possibly get new. That's the big stuff anyway.

As far as the frame/body parts go, I haven't finished the tank mounts, I haven't heard a squeak from my brother in law about the seat he started making me (I get the feeling I'm going to have to make my own.) and I need to get over to the local metal shop and see if I can get some sleeving tubes to do my own frame kit.

Still plenty of stuff that needs purchased. All in due time. So behind on bills it may take months just to catch up on them.

Oh, and the tank and seat color will be (appropriately, but accidentally) a Honda car color called Kona Coffee Metallic. Here's a pic I found of it..

Most of my bros have moved on in life so I welcome it. Haha.

One of my friends and I are talking about starting a general restoration business together. Looking forward to that possibility. He and I are bros that rarely get to hang since I have kids and he and my wife dislike each other. (Long story. They're both hardheaded)

I left most of my bros in Minnesota when I left in 06. I rarely get help in the garage, rarely have buddies at the house. It is a sad thing.

I couldn't help it. I just had to stick it "together" to see how pretty it will be...

The case is going to need a cleaning and some silver paint. I'll pretty up the head a bit, too.

Primary chain tensioner is within spec, so ok there. Just need a new cam chain, and one of my sets of mains has a scratch so that as well. I'll get a new mid roller for my tensioner.

Picked up some metal tube I had cut for collars so I can modify the frame for install/removal. A crisp tenner was all for that.

Still plenty of things on my dcc wish list, that's for sure. Coils, points and condensors, throttle tube and cables, grips, a headlight, fork seals, steering and wheel bearings... Those are the biggies anyway. That and tires.

Glad to see it coming together a bit. I know my build pales in comparison to most of them, but being the first bike I've ever owned and all that I'm still pretty jazzed about it all.

And so extremely thankful for those of you who have helped me out!

Ah! Great.

I'm going to use the 16" rear wheel I've got. I'm just not a fan of the 18, looks wise. I have both, so should I ever change my mind I can always do that...but I just like the look of a bit fatter/taller sidewall tire better.

I have a set of near new tires with tubes, but the rear is 17". You can have them for shipping plus whatever. Same goes for the rims if you want them, they aren't new but solid.

I was out looking. I've actually got a useable front tire. Honestly, I have a set of tires I can use to get it rolling. There's a brand new Cheng Shin on the 16" rim I'm going to use on the back. I just know it's cheap and likely a few years old. So I think I'll just use what I have until I can buy a new set of something nice.

Cut the frame for my "frame kit" today. Worked perfectly. Got some Gr5 1/4" bolts and metal lock nuts I'll eventually drill holes for. I'll get a picture eventually. I went to a friends house to use his compressor with my air cutter for that project.

Is that a bad angle or did they dent it on the left side? They were only two dents on it, one small one on the right front and a mild depression left of the gas cap.

I think it's just a bad angle. The depression in the top and the small one were the only ones I saw when I looked at it. I have crappy lighting in my shop.

Well...

Recently a forum member graciously sent me a copy of Mark's book, which is AWESOME (both that I was thought of and the book itself). I've been reading it every spare chance I get and also doing things here and there with the bike. I got the frame cut and the sleeves made for the "frame kit" but haven't drilled any holes yet. Any recommendations on a good bit? The sleeves themselves I'm going to have to bring to someone with a drill press. My shopsmith is dead right now (control sheeve bearing disintegrated)...

Several months ago I disassembled the carb rack and scrubbed down the carbs, but was hesistant to take them apart without knowing anything. Now that I have Mark's book I had a fire lit up my rear and decided to do that today (in the livingroom while watching a live Incubus show on YouTube). I took them apart one by one, recording the numbers and making sure each and every port and jet was clean and clear. Good thing, because most of my 40 jets were clogged. All of the carbs have the original Keihin parts in them, and are in good shape, so that's a plus for sure.

All of the carbs have: 105 mains, 40 pilots, 2.0 slide cutaway and 0.8 emulsifier tube. I pre-set the idle air screws 1 full turn out. IIRC the jet needles were set 2nd from bottom. I left them where they were. (I had done the slides previously so I didn't touch those today)

All that is left to do is clean up the floats better, get their heights set and install them. I'm not sure what the best tool for that job is (suggestions? caliper?).

I tested the two voltage regs I had and they test out OK, however I just remembered that the fancy oregon and others' rectifier/regulator is one unit now(and I plan on purchasing one), so I didn't even need to do that... Silly me!

Not a whole lot else has happened. Just getting things cleaned up. I haven't had any money so no other parts have been purchased and no body work has been done. It'll happen eventually.

I did get a really nice Wilson's leather riding jacket from my parents for Christmas this year (my mom is always thinking of my safety...when I bought my first handgun a few years ago she mailed me a slide lock. haha) so I'm looking forward to the day I get to put it on for a reason!
