not stolen
« on: September 28, 2006, 03:01:15 AM »
Most times when I go to the store, I leave the keys, helmet on seat, and gloves on the tach.
The parking lot holds 300 cars. Never had a problem.

My brother parks his bike (KTM 605?) at a mall in downtown Manchester, NH. It is noon so he locks the front end,
chains the rear wheel, takes his helmet/keys/gloves with him. After lunching he comes out to find no bike.
He calls the cops.
3 different set of witnesses say the bike was picked up:
1st witness- by 3 guys in a RED van,
2nd- by 2 guys in a BLUE newer Chevy pickup truck
3rd- by 2 buys in a Maroon truck.

The cops told my brother he probably will not get his bike back.

What is wrong here?
peace,
michel

That sucks the big one. Hope he had good all-perils insurance...

RIDE magazine in the UK did an experiment where a sportbike (with alarm) was parked up in a busy city centre, in front of loads of witnesses. Rider retreats and the mag staff, who are hidden, watch what happens when a gang of 'thieves' (other mag staff) roll up in a white van, pick the bike up, alarm blaring, and put it in the van. Rider returns ands asks people (who were there when the bike was 'stolen', and who must have heard the alarm go off) about his bike. No one noticed!

They then repeated the experiment right in front of the local cop shop. Same result.

Bottom line.: if some thieving scum want your bike they will have it. An alarm is no real deterrent. End of story.

This doesn't suprise me in the least. It hardly fazes me when a car alarm goes off anymore. Perhaps it's because alarms are used too much to find cars in parking lots, or some weird attitude that it is somebody else's problem...

Yeah, car alarms used to be rare and people would notice. Now everybody's got one and nobody notices. When I built my alarm for my old '78 Caprice, I just wired a relay to the dome light and the horn. If the door opened, the horn started blaring and didn't stop until I shut it off. A solid horn brings more attention than the normal alarm that you hear over and over.

This is all the reason for a LoJack system for your bike. I am working on becoming a dealer for them here soon. They claim your bike can be found in less than 24 hours. I say #$%* the bike, I want 5 MINTUES ALONE with the thief.  ::) :-\ There will only be one of us leaving.... 8) I am willing to bet I can scalp him to the first layer of skin to his waist in - cotterized skin- with a dull butter knife.

Most malls today have security cameras that survey parking lots, maybe a camera caught the act on tape?  Worth looking into...

I'm knocking on wood here, but i have noticed that it seems the majority of stolen bikes are modern sportbikes and scooters.  Maybe it's because they're lighter and easier to load?    Often times vandalism is the unfortunate end result.  A friend of mine had his GN400 stolen, an the thieves just threw it in a ditch.

We've got some cycle alarms here at work, and the fleeting idea of putting one on my bike was killed by the thought of a stray cat jumping on my seat ad setting it off at 3 am- not something i want to happen.

Brother had minimal insurance as it is/was mostly used as a dirt bike.

He has more bikes, but really liked this one.

My son is in the Navy stationed on O'ahu and had his GSXR 1000 stolen when he went to the movie, he said it was parked in front of the theater and had an alarm on it.The police told him he probably would not get it back and he hasn't. Trouble is, in most cases the stolen bike is immediately broken down for parts. Unless you mark every part of your bike it is impossible for the feds to link it to you. The police probably 'know' who the scumbags are, but without hard evidence cannot do antything about it, sad to relate.

I have to say that after loading my '76 CB750 onto a '79 Datsun P/U (Low,low, to the ground) that a thief would have to REALLY want one of these old bikes to steal it that way.  Anyway, most thieves are a little sissified, so we're probably safe ;)
