Storage choices Q?
« on: October 05, 2014, 01:33:39 PM »
I have a 750 that is precious to me, more than the other ones. I parked it covered in the attached garage on rubber mats and where it never freezes but started thinking about the cars melting off, temp changes and moisture.
My two other choices are, with an old car inside the enclosed race car trailer stored in a warehouse for 4 months with no heat. Or in a corner in my too small shop where we'll be rebuilding a couple funny cars this winter. Welding grinding and cutting.
 Thoughts?

I would go for the racecar trailer.  In the garage with cars having salt on them and melting is not good.  When I was married I suggested the wife park outside so my bike would have to suffer the salted air.  Guess how that went!
I now have a climate controlled shop now for my bikes, machine tools and assorted other tools.

My garage will work  :)  For that Sandcast I think the safe trailer all covered up in some blankets sounds like a nice safe place without to many fluctuations in humidity etc. from melting cars or workshop dangers.
If a friend had a nice heated walkout basement you could use that would be the bomb.

My vote goes for the workshop. As long as its covered up, it will be fine.

Low humidity is great for metal, bad for rubber and plastics.

High humidity is great for rubber and plastics and bad for uncoated metals.

I was going to suggest a big plastic bag and tossing in some desiccant inside before sealing it.  (Assumes the volatile fluids have been removed from the bike.)  But, the plastics and rubbers will out gas faster.

So, you have access to a temperature stable, humidity stable closed environment?

How about something resembling a wooden crate in the garage or shop to keep it off the floor and for extra protection. you may even be able to get a used motorcycle shipping crate like this from a motorcycle dealer . You could also add some desiccant dryers to a crate. Something like this

my dad uses stuff like this on his boat to keep the mildew away

I considered the house, the slicks from the dragster sleep all winter bagged in the spare bedroom. I'm not sure the Sandcast would be as welcome.

In the trailer makes sense but she'd be away from home all winter. It seems secure but every spring I'm anxious when I open it back up.
