Why do you need offset sprockets?

Good question...?

Shouldn't need offset sprockets for that unless the chain line for the 550 is significantly smaller than the 750...?...

Its a 650 engine. Its my understanding that the 650s run 530 chains so the front sprocket i have is a 530. Other than that i believe its the same as a 550. everything i have from the nice gentlemen on here is the widest you can got on a stock 550 setup is a 130? Correct me if im wrong. This is a whole new territory for me hence why im asking all these questions

Ill have to try and mock it up when i reassemble my wheel next week. I dont know the proper final drive of a 650. I think i can source the proper sprockets just kinda curious  what the best ratio would be for me.

Use a straight edge to check sprocket alignment with any sprocket on the rear. Sprocket Specialists can make one for the 550 rear hub. A 79 CB650 used a 40T, the 550's were 37T.

i will definitely check for alignment. I figured i would have to get something from them. The engine is out of an 82 nighthawk. Dont know if they ran something different than the earlier 650s. Not a ton of info on them like our traditional 550/750 bikes. Thanks for the info!

I didn't need anything special with a 130 tire on mine and a 140 shouldn't be a issue either.

nice. That sounds like extra money in my pocket. The bill on this build is getting pretty rediculous...

That's what you say, but we wouldn't have any idea cause there's no fricken build thread.  ;D

Oh this won't do. I suggest you pull it apart and take a proper amount of time to build your bike. Perhaps a year or so with pictures & questions and maybe ask about which oil to use.  ;D Yeah....that would be more like it.

OK good luck with the start up.

I did a lot of research on this when I swapped a 650 into my CB500. Played with gearing calculators, tire size dimensions, gear ratios in the transmission, etc.
I ended up with a 17/40 combo and it worked very well. Plenty of punch and normal revs on the interstate.

I was waiting for you to chime in Scott. Where did you source your 40t rear from? Sprocketspecialists? You running 530 or 520?

I found it on ebay.  I used the stock 550 pitch chain.

Just to clarify it. The 82 650 nighthawk ran 17/38 gearing with the 130 tire. I changed my 80 650 Custom over to it. It gives a good well rounded ratio. The 18 wheel will help a bit on the cruise rpm end.

Thanks for that info! Makes sourcing a rear sprocket a lot easier as long as the factory setup will clear the tire
