My early diecast (7xxx) almost finished...
« on: August 14, 2015, 02:16:46 PM »
I've gotten all the sub-assemblies ready to be assembled and thought this would be fun...it was for about 20 minutes and then I got lazy and just kept the various smaller parts in the bags...I did both sets of tins but the CBG one's are original. I had to do a major refurb of the original airbox but it's serviceable now, the original sidecovers are decent, the red ones are repops except for the tank, headlight bucket and ears. The pipes are 341's, the rear fender is not great but the other stuff including the engine are original. I freshened the engine with new primary chains, tensioner, cam drive chain and tensioner,  bearings and seals, I'd done the head 20 years ago with the first build and kept the rings/pistons as run. It has 98k on it and the hatch marks are still in the bores...The paint is all fresh except for the CBG tank, I left that with the factory paint and all the warts it has gotten since 1969, couldn't bring myself to strip it off as it's the first paint it ever saw...those who have done it know what this is like...and the value of these parts seperately, geez, there are some dreamers out there, huh?should be done in another few days work...

BTW, this is what it looked like when I started, good 10 footer but not great from my having done a weak effort resto 30 years ago. I got it as a chopper (king/queen, 16" rear, long fork, pipes, coffin tank, apes, etc) and should have taken a shot then, most of the factory stuff was in a big box next to the bike when I went to pick it up, thankfully...

The main plan is to use it regularly again...I have some widely varied bikes from Ducati, Norton, Triumph, CBX, S90, BSA's (my daily bus is an R1100RT), but if it came down to having just one forever it would be this one...hard to explain as it's heavy, not fast, not that nimble by modern standards...but it has a charm that's unique in my experience...

I failed to mention that I found a couple round lobes when I took it apart and some worn followers...tough to find the R2 grind original but I dug one up from a TQ midget car champ who had about 200 engines, most had the gearboxes cut off, but lots of original parts including fresh followers...he sold me a set of early "4 cable" carbs that looked brand new, I didn't really need them but couldn't resist the <$100 price  tag...so new cam and followers in it now...It has stainless spokes from the first resto as well...but the factory rims were good...

Closer...found that the original carb-to-airbox boots are quite different than the replacements...hard as they were I got them to fit the rebuilt original airbox (big job)...

First light, a few bugs to work out for a daily rider but close...I'm good with using the unrestored tank now, the other stuff matches well and I kinda like the warts of time since 1969...

A Great effort getting your bike back together again!  For you receiving that trophy just affirms that many riders acknowledge the impact the 750 had on the motorcycle industry.  Suddenly you are riding a bike that is unique and  proves the point of great Japanese engineering!  I ride an unrestored '74 cb750 Sunrise flake orange.  Every time I fire up that motor I get a rush just hearing it!  Again congrats !
