Help me make my final list for superbrightleds - 750 K3
« on: May 06, 2015, 09:18:24 AM »
I am trying to finalize an order for LED bulb conversion and need some assistance. Let me know if below looks correct and help fill in the blanks, give advice, etc.

Flasher unit for K3:
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/flashers-load-resistors/lf1-s-pin-universal-motorcycle-electronic-flasher/193/

Tail light (not stock light, uses an 1157; red for main light and white for plate illumination - all in one bulb):
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/motorcycle-led-bulbs/1157-led-bulb-dual-intensity-25-led-motorcycle-bulb/170/767/

Front turn signals (dual filament, not stock, K&S oblong mini):
?

Rear turn signals (single filament ,not stock, K&S oblong mini):
?

Gauges:
-120 degree?
-Stock face plate, which color bulb? Green?
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/bayonet-bulbs/ba9s-led-bulb-1-led-wide-angle/3/

Idiot:
-90 degree?
-Same color as each indicator

For the gauges, with stock green faceplates, id go with the Warm White color.  it'll keep it original
Green wont illuminate enough.
Those 120deg BA9s bulbs are nice.  I have them in my gauges.

For the tail/brake light that one doesnt illuminate well enough.  I'd get this one instead.
Forego (white) license plate illumination for better rearward illumination/visibility...be sure to get red.

Agree on the tail light. The one you picked is sadly dim. You really want the stop light to yell "STOP" in daylight, not just be noticeably on if someone's looking at it. The 1157-x3W-G Flyboy specs is the best all-round brightness choice (it uses the internal reflector): the 1157-xLX3-DI single 3W unit is brighter from the rear but it doesn't give as much light out the sides of the tail light assembly. Although a white license plate lamp is required in some or all stares and provinces, as long as the plate is readable at night it should be OK. In my experience cop cars all have headlights and the cops can read my plate way too easily.

"K&S oblong mini" doesn't specify what bulb type yours use. With amber lenses a white LED loses some brightness, get yellow or amber LEDs if you can. With clear lenses you can use any color you want except red, that's illegal in front and for separate rear turn signals just about everywhere.

White is best for gauges. You can try blue or green but red will be way too dim.

"Idiot lights", use matching colours if you like. Note that different colours look very differently bright for the same lumen output, blue is by far the brightest looking and a brilliant blue light in your face can be annoying. White LEDs have a fairly flat spectrum and can work through coloured lenses and the colours look pretty much evenly bright. Do not do this for the tail light though, you need a red LED!

Look for the very same lamps from China. You'll find them on eBay, mostly free shipping direct into your postbox for MUCH lower price.

I have LED H4 headlight, 30W (I have not measured the amps and verified consumption). Much brighter than original 60W/55W. I feel more visible than before, respect.

I bought a few "eastern" LED bulbs and found them uniformly awful. Lots and lots of dim LEDs does not make a bright bulb. The superbrightleds products have been good for me, you can talk to them, and maybe even get resolution if you have a problem.

The tail light you show is very dim.  I would not go with those...  I used them until I found this one at my local Autozone:

Pilot Automotive p/n IL-1157W-15

Super bright leds all over in all directions so it lights up the tail light fixture very well.  I can see the ground lit up behind me at night just with the running light and much brighter when braking.

Stock signals require amber LED lamps. 90º would be nice but I don't see any. The multi-LED 1157-x45-T in front and the 1156-x45-T in rear should be pretty nice.

Realize that LED's are not full spectrum unlike incandescent. What this means if you put a white LED in a red tail light housing you will not get any illumination. Red LED in red housing, Yellow LED in turn signal housing.
Not meaning to preach, but some folks don't realize this.
Good luck.

PeWe: I'll have to give headlight  lamps another look. Couldn't find a good one a few years ago.

Thanks for the taillight tip, I will go the all-red brighter route. Probably do warm white behind stock gauges and matching colors for idiot lights. Turn signals... I am not sure what bulb I have. It's not labeled with bulb type.

These are the signals (dual filament front, single filament rear):

I can honestly say i don't think ive ever seen dual intensity signal lamps....
Doesnt mean they don't have them, though....
That looks very similar to a BA9S base, but until one is measured, i cant be sure.
IIWY, id run these standard bulbs up front, and bright white(not cool blue) LED's in the rear.
In my experience, amber LED's tend to be washed out, and not bright enough especially in bright daylight.  Visibility is really important.

I'm trying to confirm the turn signal bulb number with K&S to be sure what it is. Back to the brighter taillight bulb... for clarification, this is taillight I am using:

http://shop.noschoolchoppers.com/33cb-tail-light-package/

It's not stock. Uses one bulb, red tail glass lense, white glass lense at base for plate illumination.

The rear LED's I installed did not light brighter than std 5W/21W. Not much watt gain when the rear consume only 5W. Brake however, take more A but for a very short time.

The real upgrade is the headlight. I have noticed that cars treat me with more respect. Yesterday evening I was closing a car from behind to pass it when the road outside town changed to a chikan, 2 lanes to one lane. I was accelerating and passed the car in over 100mph, car saw me in the mirrors and reduced speed (breaked) before I passed.

Here my LED's.
Rear:
I have the white 12 LED bulb installed. The brake light work relatively brighter than the 24 LED bulb does. Important that the brake light has much brighter light so it's visible when I'm braking.
Headlight:
LED parking light when I have that reflector and right hand controls with P. OK during daytime to be visible and charge battery.

LED H4 LO is bright, HI a little bit brighter, it's lit together with Parking. I have it off to ensure light pattern on LO. Relays control all lamps to avoid control switches to hansle 5-6A when the switch construction is very weak . 1 for LO, 1 for HI and 1 inverted to switch off Parking when Lo is lit.
I'll see what the vehicle inspection will say when they test the light. It must have a light pattern that is correct without disturbing others. I have not met any cars blinking with their headlight yet.

Here are some pics of the turn signal bulb. The larger one is my original tail light 1157. It seems to be the same base. The small turn signal bulb plugged in my tail light OK. I received my initial order from superbrightleds - everything but turn signals. Only issue is that the green sent for neutral light does not work. Works fine with another color led and my original bulb, so I'll get a replacement for that when I order turn signals and flasher unit.

I think this will work:
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/tail-brake-turn/1157-led-bulb-dual-intensity-9-led/798/

But... is 44 lumen any brighter than my 8w/23w incandescent bulb? And would I get 15 or 100 degree angle?

Yes those are "mini" 1157s in the blinkers. I would get the 100degree ones for more spread in the reflectors.

I do find them slightly dimmer than the stock bulbs during the day, in lower light settings they are the same, if not brighter... but I am not using stock blinker housing. I always use hand signals too...

OK... now back to the taillight.

The original bulb I listed has red and white (for plate) and is listed as 22 lumen:
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/motorcycle-led-bulbs/1157-led-bulb-dual-intensity-25-led-motorcycle-bulb/170/767/#/tab/Specifications

The one I ordered is listed as 270 lumen, EXCEPT when you look at the specs on the red color:
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/tail-brake-turn/1157-led-bulb--dual-intensity-36-high-power-leds/1689/#/tab/Specifications

The red is listed as 8/60 lumen vs. the white which is 50/270 lumen. So the first one might actually be brighter. Or am I missing something?
