1970 Honda CB750 Restromod
« on: May 11, 2015, 01:42:11 PM »
About a year ago a good friend of mine had to move and needed a place to store his CB750 collection, in return he gave me this 1970 CB750, ( told would store for free,But) I tore the bike down to bear frame and went from there.. A little over a year later and many sore knuckles, loss of blood and tears but I'm real close to finishing her

looks nice, but where are the rest of your frame tubes?  :o
some serious twisting going on when cornering, especially without those frame rails and triangle.  might be detrimental  :-\

Why did you remove the frame rails..?  You've made that bike dangerous, there's not a snow balls chance in hell i'd ride it like that.. There are frame kits that allow the side rails to be removed for engine removal and then, reinstalled, if I were you, i would be looking seriously into replacing those rails with a kit and make that bike safe once more. Sorry if i sound a bit harsh but thats one of the sillier things i've seen here on this forum, and you won't find many people that understand these bikes that will disagree....

Please tell us you have a frame kit hiding somewhere in that garage.  You will otherwise need some additional support to substitute for the removed frame rails under the main backbone.   :o

It looks like you spent an appreciable amount of time adapting the new front end and rear disc, and removing/reinstalling the motor (not sure if it was rebuilt).  If you don't have a fix for the frame, you may want to buy a replacement and swap your parts onto it.

Seeing as nobody mentioned it so far, are you aware there are frame kits to alleviate needlessly and dangerously removing those tubes?

Has anyone heard or seen a frame fail from this mod?   Just wondering.

It doesn't take much though see the problems scrap, one of the inherent weaknesses in these frames is immediately above the swingarm pivot, apart from a cross brace above the pivot, the other place to brace is in the corner of where the outer rails meet the frame sections coming up from the rear engine mounts, they are now gone, the other place is the steering head,  those  forces will now allow lateral movement and twisting forces at the base of that one remaining frame rail, not to mention braking and cornering stresses, usually absorbed at a number of different points on the frame, these will all now be transferred to the weakest point, being the join where the top tube meets the tank mount, it doesn't need to break to make it unsafe, I would put my money on that join being fatigued from all the stress it will now be put under........

I feel bad that he put a good chunk of effort into getting the bike that far.  I'm sure he did not expect that feedback, but to run it like that would NOT be good.
