1976 CB750 Build guidance please.
« on: June 08, 2015, 01:47:45 PM »
So, I was given this 1976 (11/75 build date) CB750. Complete but dropped on left side and poor patch on engine cover....fix that later. Last ran 2 yrs ago and before that several yrs. Tank looks nice outside, inside has a bad Kreem fix attempt. All in the bottom now. Carbs are stuck open, cable maybe. It does turn freely. 10873 miles.
So, Am I right in my thinking......
1) Pull and rebuild carbs.
2) Tank tank to rad. shop and have them strip and fix leaks in tank. (paint is no good anyway).
3) Go ahead and order Dyna electonic ignition , coils, wires and be done with that! If all else, I keep for another day.
4) Fire it up and then go to town with the tear down.

I have never had even a head off of a bike. I am sure I can, but have not as of today. Oh, wait, there was that DR650......LETS MOVE ON!
So, I would think with a bit of seafoam and new oil changes a few times in few hours of running would be ok for a 10k motor that has been ...kind of sealed up.
Fire away!

Absolutely completely clean carbs and get that tank cleaned out, great first choices. My suggestion is before you spend the money on all that ignition stuff, test what is on there now, do the tune up procedure per shop manual available here and see how she runs. My guess is if it was sealed up, no water got in anywhere and that low mileage, it should run good. But, get it running good then decide what you want to "upgrade."

And you don't need to take the tank to a radiator shop, Acetone or MEK will strip that liner out lickety-split!

If you get Dyna coils with their Dyna S ignition, get their 5-ohm coils. Using their 3-ohm coils and the Dyna S together will ensure that your battery will always be 2/3 charged, and the electric start won't work. Also, don't forget to also buy new sparkplug caps in the 5000 ohm (5K) type, part numbers SD05F and VD05F. I recommend the ND sparkplugs #X24ES-U with that bike, too. ;)

100%...just fix what needs it and run that engine.  Especially considering that you are inexperienced....these engines are not cheap or easy to rebuild.

Thanks everone for some good advice.
I will am going to cut my CB650 build short after the carbs are rebuilt and sell to fund this one. So, I will prob go ahead with the Dyna and if it all goes to s@@@ I will shelf it for the next...CB750.
Hondaman, thank you for your advice and will do!
I may do the tank myself, but told it has a leak and that was why the Kreem was used.
Month or so away, so many questions to come.

Steering damper and possibly the rear sets (I have seen people weld mounting brackets to adapt them to fit).

Thanks guys for the info/input. I will use the new shaft for front end swap. Not real crazy about the rear GSXR swing arm. So, looking at a CBR rim mayby with a CB550 arm.

Wish I had known yesterday you might want a 550 arm. I have an extra, and I drove to FL last night. I could have delivered it to you today  :-[

If you do use a 550 arm (it's a good idea on a 750 because they're at least 1" longer) the only trick will be to insure the gsxr axle and 550 hub are compatible. And of course the sprocket on the drive side will need to align with the front (perhaps a slightly custom width axle spacer). I like your plan. And of course, a caliper bracket on the brake side needs to be fashioned for the tie to the swing arm.

In looking for a frame with a title for my 1976 CB750K, I have come across a 77 Hondamatic frame about 3 hours away. Any reasons to use/not use, this frame?
