First Build, Fresh Outa Art school!

It was supposed to be my first bike, but I have never rode it.

I bought the bike out of a barn in Grants Pass, Oregon and was meant to be a dream build from the beginning. Then I deployed to Afghanistan, it was at the mercy of my best friend, who kept it through a flood and a closed business.

I still can't believe he held on to it, at one point I told him to sell it off and he could keep all the money.

Even after returning (safely), the build still had to wait. I decided to change my direction in life and go to art school. After another four years of build limbo, I've graduated, found a job, and the build continues...

These are the only pictures I was able to turn up of when It was still sort of intact. Before I took it apart in my moms garage. It was a full bike, It turned over using the kick start, but the carbs looked pretty bad, I gave the guy $500 for it.

Its a '74 Honda CB 750.

First of all, our immense gratitude is owed for your service.  Very glad you made it home safely from Afghanistan.
Second, congrats on getting your degree and finding a job.
Finally, welcome to the board.  Looking forward to seeing where you take this one.

Download the 750 manual and parts sheets.  You'll be surprised at just how much you'll refer to those parts fiches as you're trying to locate what (if any) parts are missing as you reassemble the bike.  Especially if you're doing an engine rebuild.

Don't forget to take tons of photos.  SPECIFICALLY, when you're taking components apart, make sure you take before, during and after disassembly photos.  Those are very handy as you go to reassemble.  Don't just take overall photos of the bike because you're going to want to know how it looks reassembled.

I echo what Restoration Fan has said.  I am thankful for your service.  I hope it is an experience with the unit commradere that is something you can look back on with good memories.  Keep it touch with your guys, it is a bond that will be unlike others you will have.
What kind of art degree did you obtain?  Is it in graphic design?
What kind of art do you do?

The manual are linked on the forum and read HondaMan's FAQ as well as other threads that seem relevant. They are great resources. The other build threads can inspire and give you ideas.

Welcome to the forums and ask questions about anything you need to know,  it is a good forum overall with a lot of helpful and knowledgeable people.

Similar path here. Military-College-Job-Bike. Thank you for your service and make sure you stalk these forums. It helped me out tremendously. Now, where is that artist rendering?

I've already printed out the entire manual, and parts books! (perks of working in an advertising agency). Renderings...hmmm... I got some in process stuff I've playing with, Trying to figure out what I want for this thing. It's kinda going to be a tribute bike. I was a Flight Engineer for CH47's in the Army (9 years, And it was an absolute RIDE, that I'd never trade for ANYTHING!) so I'm thinking, sheet metal style and good ol' American aviation elements. My favorite Crew during the time was on Helicopter 328 During my first deployment to Iraq (Afghanistan was my second), And I got a picture of the nose art (1st Photo) that I will eventually paint on to the bike as well. 

The last couple are of the nose art that I re did, and me sketching out what I want for the bike.My scanner mirrored them, I didn't even notice 'till now. Renderings are defiantly in order.

For those of you that asked, my web site is brandonpollardart.com, check it out, tell me good or bad stuff, I want to hear it all. I graduated with a Media Arts and Animation, Fine Arts Degree. Now I work as a graphic designer, and illustrate children's books free lance.

Not sure if Art school helped me take better photos... I draw.  8) Thanks for the proper welcome and suggestions everybody!  :)

CH-47 Chinook -- the larger Army version of the Phrog (CH-46).  Cool bird with a LONG service life.  My dad flew CH-34 helos in Vietnam.



I like the idea of incorporating your bird's nose art into the bike's paint.  I'm looking forward to your build.

That is a very pretty helicopter! I trained with a lot of old Vietnam pilots, God they are good! I also worked on ch54 fuel controls for a stint. I just am amazed to watch those things fly!

I like tribute bikes, especially if they're executed really well. And a "sheet metal bike" could be very cool. Here's one done by a White Collar Bikes in Indonesia to provide you some inspiration too. Check out the throttle on this thing!

That throttle is crazy! Love it. I really would like to stick a few crazy little things like that on this bike. Its gonna sooooo fun!

I like the bike White Collar Bike made, thanks for posting that one Cal.
It is unique.
The throttle took some work.  I like the hydraulic MCs they integrated into clutch and brake. That is unique.

I'm not too sure about that throttle, I could just imagine a small stoner or something other foreign matter ending up stuck in that throttle, if it happened whilst at speed or accelerating, it wouldn't take much to find yourself making friends with a tree, car, guard rail, you get the picture.   ;D
