I wish I could find that overhead shot of a CB750 laid out on the floor in every single separate part. :(

Hmmm!

Do you mean all the individual parts and fasteners if you dismantled absolutely everything that can come apart without being destroyed (ie dismantling a chain produces a lot of parts but they won't go back together), individual parts that Honda would sell you, or some other criteria?

There are a few assemblies that can be taken apart but were only sold complete - a lot of carb rack parts and the switchpod internals were never available for example.

Perusing a parts book would give you a few days of fun counting all the parts.

That excellent photo of the CB750 parts all laid out was missing several things.

Number of parts or part numbers? For instance, there are four wrist pins for the pistons, all the same part number. So is that 1 or four? Spokes is even a better example.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Depends, do bearings count as one part or many?  ;D

Ok, so who's got the patience to go through the parts list and add it all up?

I have a spreadsheet with all the part numbers and quantities for a CB750 sandcast.  My number is 2142.  So the steering head balls count as 37 of them.  But other parts, like the speedometer gearbox assembly are one part number but are composed of many other parts, in this case 12 parts.  So depending how you count the total number could be higher.

Of those 2142 parts how many did you have to purchase for your sandcast?  No wonder these thing cost 20 to 40k. ha,ha,ha  Don't imagine there are many sandcast parts you can buy for $1.  Glad I don't have one.

I used to keep track of what I spent and my hours but it was too scary  :o  so I don't really know.  But to answer your question, not as many as you might think.  First because they're hard to find and second because I try to save as many parts as I can (which can also get expensive).  And actually, if I had to guess, 42 isn't a bad guess.  ;D
