I have no idea where that MPH would come from only having two speeds, 20,000 RPM maybe.. Lol
1st gear on an auto is roughly 2nd/3rd gear, and high gear is roughly the same as 5th...

I understand that, I made a complete chart comparing gears, manual vs auto using different ratios. My auto ran through the traps at 11,000 @ 105 mph

Forget 10's George said he got proof in a magazine the Matic's  can run Super Gas 9.90s =  where ,when I will be there to see ........ that and 20,000 rpms on a 40 year old motor.  Bill MWS is that the yellow bike you bought in 2015 that had a 10.98 dial in board on it sitting in your driveway. Remember $200 from me on any 10's on your Matic !!!  I can get EAT MY INK to do a story on his site about that feat as we have been friends for 20 years. Chad might have won a lot in the day but I never seen him run 10's.

Well proof is a strong word, but reportedly those are the numbers quoted in the article, as reported by a 3rd party.  I have not seen the article myself, but Bill Benton bought a vintage issue of that magazine and should have it in a few days to confirm.  If the numbers are correct as from the article, I'd presume they are not typos or exaggeration.

Regarding gearing, I'll add a modest historical footnote. Keep in mind that RC favored lowering the gear count from the beginning.  The early stock frame based Assassin ran on 4 gears, 5th removed in 1971/2.  The 3 double engine (still using the factory rear trans) RC/Byron built dragsters built for the 1972 season all ran modified factory transmissions with 3 speeds only.  Shortly after, RC/Byron built the Vance and Hines double and the triple, both running Lenco two speed transmissions.  All the doubles were set up for and ran top gas, so N/A, big bore, running Weber carbs, ported 33.5/28 valve k heads, modified factory steel rods, 327 cams, on gas(VERY similar engine specs to what Bill has in his Auto dragbike ;)).  Two of the 1972 RC doubles broke national ET records in 72(the Steakley and the Adams bikes, both with Russ driving), and the V/H double simply dominated afterward.  I am certainly no expert on drag bike gearing efficiency, but RC definitely had lots of(very successful) experience with 2 to 3 forward gears on cb750 based dragbikes.  Naturally the higher power to weight a dragbike has (double engibes, power adders certainly help ) the easier it is to haul a$$ off the line with a two speed.

Carry on.... :)

George

I have that same article, for me it seems pretty vague when referencing the 9 second bike.

I too favor using less gears if possible, but only having 2 without a hand clutch is VERY limiting. I always geared my turbo Kawasaki's (250+ HP) to run 4 gears, and they were quicker. I hope to gear my latest bike (turbo CB750) to use only 4, but its likely a long shot.

The article made a reference to "fuel", Looking at the pipes I'm guessing it was ran on Nitro?

I don't know about what the "fuel" was, but the cylinder head is where it had to start from. Figure about 600 lbs with driver, how much horsepower was needed to run 138 mph? Very big bore, lots of compression, a high stall converter, a better than stock advance curve, and a large stroker crank. The  300 passes without problem either was due to very frequent oil changes for the clutch pack wear or RC figured out a way to reduce the clutch pack slippage (higher oil pressure?)
The best I did was 100 horses at the rear wheel with a loose torque converter (6k launches) Rick Stetson said to me that I was leaving 30 horses on the table by using the flat top pistons. I don't think that the ported head that I used would flow enough for another 24 horses at the rear wheel. I did 124 mph and change at 620 lbs. Could have added another rear sprocket tooth as the finish line was only about 10.5k. Don't know how he did it.

Yes, I saw that too. What fuel/gas was used for the 9.96? The article is somewhat nebulous.

At 620 pounds, it takes approximately 128-130 HP at the rear wheel to run 138MPH.

I'm on a diet. ..lol.Soon as I get the Modern Cycle magazine, I'll let yall know. Looks like both clutch packs spin all the time with the manual valve (actuated by shifter) the determining factor for which one gets oil pressure. More oil pressure to clutch pack would help.. looking in to it now. Check out this nifty 14mm drain plug I got for it! It's magnetic also.

Geez, that's a lot of money, especially for a motor that will accumulate maybe 100 miles in it's lifetime. :o
Sam, the rockers would still need to be ground after hard-facing.
