Forget 10's George said he got proof in a magazine the Matic's can run Super Gas 9.90s
Well proof is a strong word, but reportedly those are the numbers quoted in the article, as reported by a 3rd party. I have not seen the article myself, but Bill Benton bought a vintage issue of that magazine and should have it in a few days to confirm. If the numbers are correct as from the article, I'd presume they are not typos or exaggeration.
Regarding gearing, I'll add a modest historical footnote. Keep in mind that RC favored lowering the gear count from the beginning. The early stock frame based Assassin ran on 4 gears, 5th removed in 1971/2. The 3 double engine (still using the factory rear trans) RC/Byron built dragsters built for the 1972 season all ran modified factory transmissions with 3 speeds only. Shortly after, RC/Byron built the Vance and Hines double and the triple, both running Lenco two speed transmissions. All the doubles were set up for and ran top gas, so N/A, big bore, running Weber carbs, ported 33.5/28 valve k heads, modified factory steel rods, 327 cams, on gas(VERY similar engine specs to what Bill has in his Auto dragbike

). Two of the 1972 RC doubles broke national ET records in 72(the Steakley and the Adams bikes, both with Russ driving), and the V/H double simply dominated afterward. I am certainly no expert on drag bike gearing efficiency, but RC definitely had lots of(very successful) experience with 2 to 3 forward gears on cb750 based dragbikes. Naturally the higher power to weight a dragbike has (double engibes, power adders certainly help ) the easier it is to haul a$$ off the line with a two speed.
Carry on....
