More front brake mods with KLR650 caliper and more pictures
« on: October 18, 2014, 10:59:41 AM »
A while back I mounted a Kawasaki KLR650 master cylinder and a stainless brake line on my '76 CB550. I also installed EBC semi sintered brake pads. The results were pretty good but I was still wanting more. I decided to mount a late model KLR650 twin piston caliper.  I found one from a 2013 KLR650 for 17 dollars on Ebay. The caliper and the original Nissin pads (HH compound) are like new. Lots of work involved in this mod making brackets and modifying fork mounts so everything is lined up properly. The results are very satisfying. This is now a true two finger brake.

Any progress pictures to show the mods? I have wanted to do this but have mostly been told there isn't enough space between forks and spokes

Nice job. The bracket looks like a series of parts.
Would you have pictures of the parts separated?

Here's a pic of the brackets and a pic of my commuter special CB550 (including old man windshield and luggage rack) and a pic of my Ducati which made me want a better front brake on the Honda. Brackets are 3/8" 6061 T-6 aluminum with a 3/16" spacer between them. Sorry, no progress pictures of the installation. No spoke clearance problems with this caliper. You'd probably run into spoke clearance problems with an opposed piston caliper like 4 or 6 piston caliper. I'll try to give a detailed description of the installation if anyone needs it, but it's basically looking, measuring, cutting, grinding, sanding and repeating and making sure everything is straight and lined up properly.

Thanks. I used a stock 550 disc drilled to match the swept area of the new pads. I have since sold the bike but if I were to do this again I would have the disc thinned.
