Scary stuff
« on: November 07, 2006, 06:58:35 AM »
Just got my frame and parts back from the powder coating firm, the frame looks too nice to touch (see pic), the next job is to lower it over the engine, scary stuff. The guys at the powder coating firm recommended using the preformed pipe lagging to protect the frame, will give it a go.

Cheers

Search for CB750 engine installation and you will (may?) find the thread on how to do it by laying the engine down on its side and lowering the frame over it.

Hi,
The job was done by Elite Engineering in Aintree Liverpool (UK Liverpool), they are all bike enthusiasts there and know what they are doing, one of the guys is restoring his CBX and a Seeley racer.
With the frame went 26 other items to be coated, plus there was some weld repairs due to corrosion, especially on the front down tubes, by the riders footrest, and on the welded part of the left hand top mount for the shocker. I knew about the first job but the other bits became apparent when they had blasted the frame.
Before I took the parts in I thoroughly de greased them and flushed out the oil tank with Kerosene, removed all the bushes and bearings holders, the lower shocker bushes on the swing arm were fun to remove, required a bit of violence, my thumb still hurts.
They usually quote 10 - 14 days turnaround time but they came in at about 10 days for me, they even try to get the job done ready for weekends.
The total cost was an eye watering £298, but I consider it well worth it.
this is the list of items I sent:
Elite also do bead blasting, alloy polishing, cylinder head repairs and all sorts of clever stuff, I'll probably take my spare F2 head over there to get the bashed fins fixed.

Get some cardboard taped to the down tubes before you start engine install. You don't want to scratch it.

I left most of the clear plastic wrap on the frame as I built my 2 bikes.  Keeps the crap off of everything. You might consider wrapping the frame with plastic wrap again while your building.

Dennis, lookin good  ;)...I know a few guys that have used them....always good finish.

Take the exhaust stubs of the head before fitting the frame...put them back when done.

You can come and do ours when the motors ready, thats if you do a good job. ;D ;D ;D

Good luck, Sam. ;)

Long strips of sliced-up inner tube wrapped around the frame worked very well for me... not a single scratch or mar.

Thanks for all the replies, suggestions and offers of employment (thanks Sam)! Just went through your saga Seaweb and it is definately a spur to see it through, sounds like you had a few rough times there at the end, hope the bike is still going well.
I will be keeping all the powder coated stuff wrapped until I use them, as I am cleaning up other bits I bag and label them, where necessary I also give them a coat of WD40 to ward off the cold, damp, English weather.
Going to go with the pipe wrap (see pic) idea the guys at Elite mentioned to me, though it may be a bit thick so I might have to revert to the cardboard/inner tube method.
Will keep you posted on progress, just finishing up some polishing on the covers and other bits that are easier to do on the bench, then will go for it, when this one is done the F2 is waiting in the wings.

Thanks

Haven't go the engine in the frame yet, have been replacing the old cover Allen screws with new chromed ones, as I took each one out I polished that area of casing. On the undersides of the casing the alloy was still in it's original state, being lazy I did not want to go through the wet and dry route to polish so I used my Dremel with an abrasive brush (538) this is not  a wire brush and as long as you don't push too hard it is very gentle on alloy, a final polish with Autosol applied with a little polishing mop brings it up great. In the photo I have just used the Dremel and have not polished yet.
I also found out why my neutral light stayed on all these years, the cable had chaffed on the underside of the motor and was grounding out there.
While the engine was still on the bench I did the static timing using my Hi Tech timing light (it was a torch), but looking at the points I've ordered a complete backplate set from DSS.
Hopefully next post will see the engine in the frame.

Cheers

That engine looks BEAUTIFUL!!   Den, if you need a lift man-handling the engine into the frame, please give me a shout. I'd be more than happy to drive over to meet you, help you, drain you of all your knowledge, cosh you on the head and drive away with that gleaming motor  ;D

Seriously though, if you need a lift, let me know.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the offer, but I cheated and lifted the frame over the engine ! Have a look in the Tricks and Tips FAQ for the full story. http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=15321.msg159553#msg159553
Must make time to pop over and see you some time, you only live about 20 minutes away and as I'm retired I have loads of time to spare as long as I do all the jobs "She Who Must Be Obeyed" gives me !
Hopefully next year when I get to the CB750F2 I might take you up on the offer as I have to lift that engine in.

Cheers
