Although I agree he didnt seem to be paying attn to the road, I doubt there could have been anything he could have done.
I've hit two deer, one while driving my truck, the other my car.

I tend to agree.  That deer came out rather quick.  I don't know if any normal reaction time would allow for braking or swerving sufficient to avoid the collision.

I'm surprised he didn't break his collarbone.  I saw how his hand hit the ground, must have really trashed his shoulder, not to mention broke his wrist.

deer/motorcycle crashes are no laughing matter in regions with high deer population.  Although I have avoided them more times than not, I have hit several deer with cars, even two at once.  A good friend of mine hit one at 60 mph on his evo sportster, went down hard, totaled his bike, and after two years is just beginning to feel confident on a motorcycle again.   Another friend hit one on a bigger Dyna and ran the #$%*er down, and somehow rode it out, recieving only a cut hand from a broken rearview mirror.  Obviously, deaths caused by mc/deer collision happen every year in Michigan.

Sorry, Sean.  I didn't mean to be insensitive.  It is absurdly rare to see live deer in Southern California.  This guy got extremely lucky by comparison to your friend.  My uncle in Virginia used to say that wild boars and turkeys were a more frequent road hazard than deer, but obviously it varies with geography.

no man, I did not feel you were being insensitive.  Just wanted to remind folks that live around big game of all kinds that serious consequences can result.  Hell, I can see hitting a squirrel causing one to get spat off.  My closest roadkill call on a motorcycle was with a big fat frickin' woodchuck!

I would hope the elk are smarter/less suicidal.  Evanphi should be along shortly to complain about Moose.   And then Terry and Mick got Roos to tangle with...if you don't finish 'em off theygonna bounce around and punch you.

The deer around here are relitively small, but can you imagine hitting one even the size of a dog at 80mph?  You are going down hard. 
Since I ride mostly rural, deer are more of a concern to me than cagers.

True, an Elk or a Moose are a very large animal. But we have so many dang deer that you're no longer "at risk" simply while riding, the darn beasts have taken up menacing the locals while fishing

Goes to show why proper equipment is worth the investment and small discomfort on hot days. The helmet, jacket and gloves probably saved him from being seriously messed up.

CB750 CRF -  You need to watch Bambi again. That was no fawn...no spots.
Had a buck run along side of me in a car about 15 feet away as I was on I270 on NE side of Columbus, Ohio probably close to 20 yrs ago now (since it has been about 11 yrs since I lived there.)  My dad was with me in the car and he never saw it...despite it being beside him.  We were about to exit onto SR161 going S bound on I270. There was woods across the freeway in our neighborhood (Sunbury Woods) and on the opposite side in Huber Village. They would cross over the freeway despite heavy traffic. 10 ft fences didnt dissuade them, they just became better jumpers. The park along the freeway in Westerville a couple miles to the west had such a deer problem a few years later they closed the park for a bit while the Game commision special shooters thinned the herd to reduce the population. They used rifles. The deer population had reached a level they were starving. They were also crossing the freeway and causing bad accidents. They had 15 foot fences along that section of I270 and they were able to scale that fence too!

I hear you Stev-o.  I won't ride at night in rural areas if I can help it.  I've ridden and driven in central Texas a fair amount and the only place I've seen more roadkill is Florida.  I don't even like to drive a car at night in Eastern Oregon as the whole area is crawling with suicidal deer, so I am not without sympathy for the guy in the video.  That one was avoidable though.  Like a lot of youtube videos I've seen, the rider was more focused on delivering his line of BS than riding the bike.  He had his left hand off the bar just so he could gesticulate to drive home whatever goofy point he was trying to make.  If he was paying attention he could have seen the deer, but he doesn't even notice it is there until he is hitting it.

I was riding tonight back from Born Free in one of the few spots in Southern California where they do occasionally have deer.  Of course, I started thinking about this thread!

Elk and Moose kill a lot of people if hit with a car. Most cars will not prevent an animal like that from coming through the windshield. Volvo has actually done designs/testing to ensure their cars will prevent it.   Saw footage years ago where a deer jumped from an overpass onto a passing Dodge and the hooves went through the roof allowing the deer to go through the roof into the vehicle and it caused quite a mess with the vehicle's occupants. I don't remember if anyone was killed or just badly injured.

When I told my dad about that deer he scolded me for not trying to stop.  When the deer is racing you along side my thinking was, you don't want to give them the advantage of being faster or they might want to try and pass in front of you.  There would have been little I could have done to get out of it's way if it had decided to come across before or after I saw it as traffic was dense enough that I couldn't change lanes quickly and safely.  It was around dusk...twilight time for deer.
