There will be oil
« on: July 15, 2016, 12:35:21 PM »
While I am at this stage with my project. Maybe there will be some interest. Doing some rotors on CNC. Of corse much better then originals... Materials tolerances etc...

Yes please. Depending on cost I could be in for up to 3. Definitely one for my current project and one for my AHRMA racer.

Some relevant info on the topic by Elan here

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,144610.0.html

maybe it will simplify things a bit for you. Kawi parts are pricey, so starting from scratch with better materials might actually be cheaper and better. From what I learned around here, the impellers themselves contribute less to the loss of pressure, than what the worn out end caps actually do. Milling a few thous on the pump body and the end caps to regain the tight clearances has been a solution, along with other options like shimming the bypass valve springs etc. Generally speaking though, these overbuilt pumps on a vanilla engine with souped up internals will only make it more likely for the engine to leak. But I still souped them up anyway :D on mine, I'm sure race engines and such would certainly benefit...just my worthless rant here, totally love your work Mierko.

What material?  4140 maybe?  I notice on the original. Ones they seem soft as they are usually. Marked up..
I suspect the factory ones were sintered material....

I would say its a good idea depending on the price point, for a 750 with 2 rotors a pressure and scavenge side i would hope to be under $200, for some other wet sump bikes that are just a pressure pump i would hope to be under $100?

Team up with Elan selling his stopper valve kits and you could offer a full rebuild kit

I have 3 or 4 oil pumps that could use these. From the pumps I have seen there is never perfect just varying degrees of bad...

Original rotors are sintered material... they are very soft. You are very close ;) This is steel 4150... I will probably leave it like this... without further thermic treatment. Because it is already harder then original rotors. Or maybe I will do slight nitrating to around 55RC.

The reason I am doing this is because I cant put old worn rotors. I know they will works but it is a risk. This rotors I am making will outlast old ones by big margin ;)

And I made my own springs for oil pump ;) I adjusted spring lengths so pump will give me a little bit higher pressure.

I am asking for interest because machinist shop will charge according to ordered quantity...  The bigger the order it will be cheaper per unit... And it will be below 200$ for sure.

Hard part is finished

There is 0.12mm of clarences between inner and outer rotor. Below original 0.15mm And they are turning smoothly.. Maybe I should have tried 0.10mm... Next time

Fancy work! It will be great to have new rotors around again. They were never available from Honda, only whole pumps could be had.

I finished the rotors some time ago. I left them spin for a half a day to break in. Clearance between rotors is 0.10~0.12mm... outer rotor to body clearance is 0.10mm. I was thinking to do some thermic treatment but this material is harder then sintered original material

I'm by no means a mechanical engineer but from what I understand the transmissions of our 750's rely on the oil released from the pressure relief spring (please correct me if I'm wrong) if that's true then wouldn't increasing the tension of that spring to boost oil pressure make the trans have to wait that much longer till it got oil flow? Please don't read between the lines here, I think what you're doing is FANTASTIC, I'm not try to be critical in any way I'm just asking an engineer wannabe question.

The secondary side feeds the transmission with scavenged crankcase oil part of the return flow to the tank. I think there is always some part of oil present in sump. I read that back in the days standard kit from Honda for CR750 came with stronger relief spring. There is a topic on forum....

When will these be available for purchase? My AHRMA racer can use all the oil it can stand and this seems like good insurance to me for any hi-po application.
