I replaced the old stock lines with new 3/16 since that was the best I could do that I could route properly. I also tried the Hondaman suggested emergency fix for the tang, I used my knife to scrape more metal away then 1000 grit paper to smooth. All that is left is a barely perceptible dot that looks like the tip of a small straight pin. I topped off the tank and no leak so far, but the test will really be after a few hours of high RPM road time.

And here is my new oil pressure gauge, solidly mounted and reading properly.

Over 3100 miles already, so oil change on deck for Amarillo tomorrow.

Danny,

This has been one helluva shake down cruise. You should have it squared away by the time you get home.  ;D Glad you are having fun and surviving.

Well, that was fun.  Thanks to Danny for making this happen and to all that showed up. It was great meeting some friends and acquaintances again and making new ones. Combine that with a great ride to and from, there isn't much more to ask for.
I think we need a picture of your odometer. ;D ;D

Time to change the oil and check the tappets. ;)

Scottly,
If Danny's 75 petcock is still stock for that year (I think it is), then it has the nylon cone selector intsead of that 4 holed rubber thing that other petcocks have. I don't see how black bits could come from there.
What I could see of the sock in the tank looked intact.  Only thing I could think of was the fuel line. But, now that I think of it, the vent lines could also feed black bits into the carb bowls.  Who knows what is inside those that insects can carry in.

Danny didn't tell us if he found more black bits in the carb bowl, did he?

Cheers,

I'm not familiar with the nylon cone type petcock, but I have seen the rubber disc things crumble off bits with each operation.

I thought the nylon cone was a '76 only thing. I didn't want to open up the petcock today because sometime doing things like that creates all new problems and I have limited resources available to me here. I'll just have to be extra vigilant about fuel smell while riding (it was very noticeable yesterday, I just didn't make the connection with a leak out the overflow while cruising at 75mph). I am also going to slow down a bit. Yesterday I spent a lot of time blitzing down the back roads trying to get to the interstate before dark (I am tired of pitch black roads). Tomorrow should be mostly highway (US 40) and I am aiming for Oklahoma City, which will be about 540 miles. Even though the limit on 40 is 75, I think I will hold at 70 and see how that works.

Going to stop at a Honda shop in Amarillo, about 1/2 way to OKC to see about an oil and filter change as I am due.

This has been really fun and I have seen some amazing things, but I am really looking forward to a night in my own bed. 2 more night on the road should do it, then one long trip Friday.

Danny, Blue Sky in Amarillo is a good place for a good burger and it is inexpensive. They even have a few inexpensive Thai places that are pretty good.
Are you changing it yourself or having a shop do it?
Cars are easy, just popping into a quick change place or dealer's oil change place...motorcycles do not have those same conveinences available.  A sheet of plastic and container to collect the oil and drain the filter...stop by the auto parts store to recycle the oil.  Fumoto makes nice quick change valves used on cars and trucks.  I have wondered if they would work well on a motorcycle, not that it is difficult or necessarily messy...changing the filter is where the mess comes into play. The quick change valves are a depress and rotate valve after you slip a tube over the valve output.  Makes it very easy and far less mess than otherwise and no need for a oil drain plug washer.  Your mess then is just changing out the filter.  You could easily drain oil out by the quart...just having an  empty bottles handy .  A stop at most auto parts stores you can find a empty bottle in the trash near their oil recycling container.

Danny,
The 75 and 76 models both used the cone type petcocks.
The sock I saw in your tank was indicative of that type.
There is an o ring in that type.  But, when that goes, it leaks at the petcock handle.

When one collects every model year, these nuances smack one in the face.
I agree the 4 hole rubber disc type does crumble with age.  And I don't think the modern gas plays well with the old rubber, either.

Just looked on TripAdvisor, if you like Asian they have a Pei Wei Asian Diner, if you are not familiar with them, they are a very good Asian place and are owned by Mark Pi's and they are a less expensive casual trending more towards fast food.  Fwiw...
Good luck with the float repair, I hope it has eliminated the problems you were having.

What sort of gas mileage have you been getting, Danny?

For the first 3rd of my ride Monday I got 43. The last 3rd was 34. I didn't track the middle when it was leaking. Low 40's is what I expect to be getting. The best tanks have been 47-48. We'll see how the first tank goes today, but I expect it to be back to 41 or so.

I'm going to have the change done by a dealer. I could do it myself here at my buddy's before heading out, but have no way to dispose of the old oil. In this instance paying extra to have a dealer handle it makes the most sense.

I had a couple of nasty surprises like that. My battery totally failed very suddenly on the 750 once and another time my rectifier packed up. In both cases I had no warning. So now all vehicles have a voltmeter. That way I can see the problem coming before I'm stranded.

Shortly, back-to-back tanks of 33mpg. But lots of rolling hills, 70-75mph speeds and fairly stiff cross winds.

Not to interrupt Danny's issues and wonderful ride but,

I got the fuel line T'd today. Throttle next I think but gotta head out for 3 days work.

Is there a way to hook these Webers up to sync or is it by ear?

I am presently in Kentucky. This oil leak is driving me batty. Anyone know where Honda man \ Mark lives?  If it is in my path I my contact him and have him fix that head\puck gasket leak and fly back to get it when it is repaired. Or just keep riding and wiping my left leg of flung oil. Otherwise Dash is doing so well.

Mark is in Colorado!!? You were a heck of a lot closer to him a week ago. Just be sure to keep the oil level up if you decide to continue.

Mark is an hour north of me in the Denver suburbs, Lakewood I believe. Did you stuff a ladies toiletry item in the fins?  ::)

Nose around a little. Kentucky is moonshine territory. Around Lexington and Louisville you can take on some of the Bourbon Trail and tour the distilleries. If you go to Makers Mark you can get their Makers White  ;) Only place you can purchase. Right off the still but the strength is cut. It's GOOOOOOOOD! I didn't bring that to Dolores.
