My friend is a short guy so I call him Half Pint

I have a Rose, we always use one syllable names for our hunting dogs so its easier to call in the field.

Little #$%* until he gets big. Then you call him, Big #$%*. Or D.A.D. aka, Dumb Ass Dog.

Usually, or often.... the name morphs into a longer one.
. Like Ellie ...became Ellie-Bo-Bellie..
. And Tasha became Tasha-Bedasha

Kurt Vonnegut always called his characters dogs Kazak.

Kazak was eaten by a trio KokoBono children in the story Galopagos.

In another story, Kazak traveled an interdimensional portal with it's owner.
