Oil line routing with oil cooler
« on: September 08, 2016, 08:20:26 am »
While doing some more research about how oil lines should route between the cooler, tank and engine, I got to thinking. The way my current set up is (have not run engine yet) is that oil exits the tank, goes up front to the cooler, then is drawn through the engine via the oil pump. Then cooled oil can go through the engine and exit the other fitting at the pump and return to the tank.

My question is if this will cause any issue with sucking air at an point? It looks like other system cool the oil after it exits the pump before it returns to the tank. I guess I am wondering if there will be an issue with oil starvation as the system tries to draw oil through 5 feet of line between the oil tank and pump with the cooler in between.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

From your description you have too many feet of line and won't get any oil from the tank unless you add another pump and seal the tank. Conventional system looks to be the shortest and most efficient.

Not really what Im looking for. I know the CR is setup similar, I just want to make sure I have the tank, pump, and cooler in the right configuration so I don't starve the motor. How does the flow of the CR system work?
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Tank to pump by suction to motor to filter to cooler to return line above motor to oil-tank...........always under 60+lbs. pressure from the pump.

I think that is the way Doctor_D did his as well as Old Scrambler suggested. From the oil tank through the pump/filter/engine, exiting engine to the cooler, then back to the tank.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Thanks for the info guys. This is a real pain since I had my lines made having not asked the question. I guess this is a live and learn moment to research, THEN buy.

You don't want to add a cooler and lines - especially if they go above the oil tank level!!! - to the oil feed line from tank to pump. This is an unpressurized suction feed to the pump: restriction or air lock could cut off oil feed to the pump... results probably disastrous. Best to have the shortest fattest hose that fits (ie the stock one).
The easiest plumbing is to use a filter adapter (and the only uncomplicated way with a wet sump engine), but this can restrict flow to the engine unless done right.
For your dry sump engine, I think the best way is to take the scavenge pump feed from the engine to your cooler and then back to the tank. Although normally working at low pressure, the 750's scavenge pump is quite powerful and will overcome reasonable restriction.
It doesn't much matter where in the circuit you have the cooler as far as cooling effectiveness goes.
