Topic: 1965 CB77 - starting back up!

Soooo.....some of you may have seen my recent post about CB350 Twins.  Well....we got totally sidetracked while cruising around for a 350 and walked home with a 1965 CB77 that is mostly complete.  Rose (wife) has been lusting after these for a while, but we just didn't have any show up near us in an affordable price range.  The main thing it's missing are the side covers and tool kit.  All else appears to be there and in very good shape under minor surface rust and grunge.  We are hoping it has mostly the original pieces and parts for the 1965 model....if not we'll try and source correct pieces. 

Bike will get a full disassembly and rebuild along with a complete engine tear down (motor is currently stuck). We are going to do our best to replace all necessary bits with OEM pieces.  Not going for museum quality, but would like to be as close to 100% stock as possible. 

The mufflers and header pipes are extremely solid and only has little bit of scraping/dent on the right hand muffler under the footpeg.  I haven't scrutinized, but the fenders appear to be in decent shape under the rust and the Tank appear to be free of dents and dings.  The Tank is absurdly clean inside!

Bad thing is it's cold as hell in my detached garage...so we're going to slowly strip it and move it to a work place in the basement.  Goal is a late spring completion

Nice, congrats. I've got a cb77 on the back burner. Crazy turn signal switch on that thing -- I'm guessing aftermarket signals to comply with law in a state that doesn't grandfather old bikes w/o signals...

A lot of old bikes have aftermarket signals of various types.  Some ebay sellers have interesting ones that clamped to the handle bars in front.  Check some of the CA95 bar turn signals.

Forgot to congratulate you on the new bike and project.  Parts issues are rampant with the CA77 and CA78 bikes and I bet the CB77 is not too much different.

   Cool Find!  Kinda partial to these myself. Bee looking to see the progress on this one.  I'd post a photo of my '66 CB77 Super Hawk, but I am on my wife's PC for now. I have found parts for these, from ebay, folks over on 305.com, and another place or 2, that I can't recall right now. Got a lot of info on these, from folks on here and also, lots of info over on 305.com as well. I understand your comments on that gas tank, unbelievable!    I started gathering parts to build one, some time back and had it in a partial mockup stage and "Life Took over', but hoping to get back on it this Spring, at the latest.

Looks extremely clean.  Is it unrestored or has it been rebuilt over the years? 

Currently doing a lot of research over at the Honda305 and HondaTwin forums to be sure we rebuild this one as close to stock as possible.

Engine has never been touched.  Fenders, tank and frame have been repainted in original colors.

   Very cool, that you have your Dad's. I wish I had at least one of the bikes my Dad had. I do have a Super Hawk Myself, with what I think, is enough to build another.

Small update...Weather is Cold as hell at the moment...but we had a few good 50F days last weekend and Rose got a the bike partially stripped down and bagged/tagged for moving into the basement workshop.   



Carbs are damn near as spotless as the tank.  I'd like to go back in time and kiss the person who drained the fuel before letting the bike sit for decades. 



We got the front fender straightened up well using a wooden dowel rod to flex it out.  Same with the right side fender stay.  At this point the front and rear fenders are in fantastic shape and just need stripped and painted.

Bummer part is the Exhaust.  They feel extremely solid but after removing we found some cracks in the mufflers near the Head Pipe joint.  also the right side has some bottom side road rash.  Probably going to shell out for a reproduction system from David Silver Spares.  Oh...I think some small furry animals were living in the pipes   



Wire harness is in great shape except for the fact that the sheathing is completely hardened and brittle.  Probably going to unwrap and inspect the wires and then re-wrap with bits from http://www.cycleterminal.com/sleeve-tubing.html



Have had the cylinders soaking with a 50/50 Acetone and ATF fluid for a week now and cant get it to budge.  Got to tear down anyway so probably just gonna deal with it on the bench.

I think we're going to try the following kit to save many of the original hardware.  http://www.eastwood.com/ew-electroplating-system-tin-zinc.html    Unless someone has a good source to send it all out to.  Tried searching the forum but seems the search function is out of commission.

I FOUND A plater in Rock Island IL that would do restorative zinc plating. I'll try to get the name for you. Its very reasonable IIRC.

There's a place in TX that does restorative CB77 engines. My engine still turns over, but it doesn't matter to him. They do a 1st size overbore, repaint everything, head and valve job, etc.  A bit pricey, but I want a near 100pt restoration for mine (as I can't ride it). Bruce and I will do the chassis. Have to get it on a pallet for shipping.

Original color was Honda white, and so it will be again. I may violate the 100pt restore by adding BMW style twin pin stripes, red and blue. I have the original gold leaf tank emblems and the original seat, in good shape.

I bot some stainless steel repr mufflers years ago, they are hanging on the wall. The orig muffs are intact, but rusty pin holes.

I rode mine about 2000 miles before I parked it. A couple of overnight. out of state tours with soft bags and a luggage rack, and a small tank bag. Great bike!

Here's my "Sport touring CB77"    with Linda on her ZL600 (monster cruiser, even at 600cc. Its a detuned Ninja motor.)



The CB77 has a small but effective windshield on it also.

Shelbyville would be good. IIRC, zinc is done by the pound, rather than by the piece, so its not very expensive.

The chrome on my rims is pitted. Don't know if they can be rechromed or not, hope so.

There is a plater up in MN I believe it was that does top shelf work. I had them redo a bumper center section about 10 years ago and they reformed it after stripping and did a great job on the plating. Wasn't a huge price either.  I was able to get some of the parts from the dealer and the center section was NLA so a good replacement went to the platers to strip and redo.  You couldn't tell they reshaped it (They had the stock patterns to go by) unless you looked at the rear of the center section. The beauty side didn't show anything and was a perfect fit to the L shaped bumper ends on each side. They had bumper over-riders over the seam between the ends and the center section.  It was a 1966 car...lots of brightwork. (chrome plated anodized aluminum & chrome with some pot-metal chromed as well.)
