Lovely bike but it is too late (1979) for classic racing over here (UK). I don't know what the rules are in the States?

Not sure why he advertised as 79, because it's obviously older.

Probably down to the year the frame was made which is what dates a bike over here.

Possibly, but without knowing for certain I think those Dresda frames per date 79.

Apparently Dave Degans did a few for endurance racing in the early 70's and was still doing them into the 80's. Also did frames for T500 Suzukis. Of course he made his name with the Dresda Tritons. Can't think of any other reason he would advertise it as a 1979 as an earlier one would be classic eligible and therefore worth more?

I doubt he'd punch a date on the frame? Besides it would be considered "unchanged or like" therefore grandfathered. Agreed though, the seller should have realized so not sure why he used 79.

" Of the period" is the term we use down here.
My frame was fabricated around 1995 copied from an English Windle from the early seventies.

I'm sorry but I don't see $30k there. Lots of trick parts yeah but I'm thinking you could build it new for what the buyer paid.

You better be able to build a cool Honda Four for 15 K......

A competitive front running bike for that period?
Not in a blind fit.
A road going lookalike?
Not an issue.

I don't speak the Queen's English, but I think bear is telling me I'm nuts. Here is how I see it:

engine                   10000
frame                   3500
tank/seat                   1500
f/r suspsnesion   2000
brakes                   2000

I think the engine value is high at 10 thou, but that above get you to $19K. I think my overestimation of 10 on the engine would cover the other odds/ends that you would encounter. I will revise that you could not build a fresh one for the $16K it sold for.

I'm not saying its not an awesome bike that I would love to take out racing, but it isn't $30 grand either.

It might be he described it as 1979 because it started life as a road bike, Dresda did quite a lot of road going CB750s. Over here we have a small "substantially unchanged" run on allowance (I think around 3 years) but we also have to prove that combination was raced in period (without run on) in the UK.

That said, I wouldn't mind racing it in Post Classic.

Happy to meet you halfway at $25K.
But your not over estimating the cost of motor.
The last motor I sold was on a par with your estimate and it had 600 hours on it.

It was built in the UK by a member from here called Lord moon pie.

I'll simply be called #$%* if I take this much further,    but just a couple additions. Perhaps it could be possible to find a used Dresda frame, if so great. If you have a replica frame built to include some modern specs or have a Dresda replica swingarm built it will overrun 3500. Build a set of new wheels, upwards of 1K, race tires, sprockets. Those vintage CR's cost a small fortune. There is a cost for exhaust. Machining custom parts, possible cylinder coatings, etc, etc. The owner asked me to call because he said he didn't want to take the time to type all the mods. I don't know the complete story, but it's not run of the mill. Can you build one for less, well absolutely.

 First off I did not take a hard look at the auction..
 What I meant was a very noteworthy . Nice build that was probably above average and fresh..7-9 K should get a decent motor...myself I tend to find rather nice parts reasonable and gather them up before you build, I have no choice. I wasnt counting on a custom frame unless of course used. And not counting labor.
 If you buy carbs, wheels everything new, price gets higher, but even a trio of AP calipers new is under a g-note.
 I did say a cool Honda four, not a replica of the auction bike.
 And racebikes are rarely  fresh in the motor dept, the value is often more in its provenance....aka race history.

Turbo...no body ..well almost nobody builds a racebike to produce billable hours..
Unless you build to order, which takes deep pockets.

The other thing is, some folks..a lot actually tend to keep track of total cost.... Well if you run a bike four years, and blow a few motors.. ....well you can only claim the price of one engine build. Towards the value of the bike..

Can anyone tell me the price of a set of Kibblewhite 5mm stemmed oversize Black Diamond valves with the spring kit, retainers and valve guides ? 
If anyone can build one of these bikes that is reliable, handles well and is capable of winning races on the cheap, then you should be in the business of building race bikes. haha.

Vintage race bikes full of rare and hand made high performance parts built to withstand a high level of competition can get shockingly expensive and time consuming to build.  It's not too hard to spend 10 grand on the race engine alone.

I wish the new owner well, who ever he/she is.

I would venture a guess that member 'lord moon pie' didn't spare any expense on that build..

A good bit of kit.
It's a shame we seemed to have lost track of it.
