Victory Motorcycles Cancelled !
« on: January 09, 2017, 08:10:16 AM »
Wow ! http://www.motofire.com/2017/01/news/victory-motorcycles-is-closing-down/ In a statement released today, the Chairman and CEO of Polaris, Scott Jones expressed his difficulty in making the decision to close the factory doors,
“This was an incredibly difficult decision for me, my team and the Polaris Board of Directors. Over the past 18 years, we have invested not only resources, but our hearts and souls, into forging the Victory Motorcycles brand, and we are exceptionally proud of what our team has accomplished. Since inception, our teams have designed and produced nearly 60 Victory models that have been honoured with 25 of the industry’s top awards. The experience, knowledge, infrastructure and capability we’ve built in those 18 years gave us the confidence to acquire and develop the Indian Motorcycle brand, so I would like to express my gratitude to everyone associated with Victory Motorcycles and celebrate your many contributions.”

Interesting, but I'm not surprised. Victory made what appeared to be some terrific bikes. The Vision tourers look amazing. But it never really came close to rivaling HD.

Indian on the other hand can (and I think will). It has the history and the look. Shutting down Victory will free up resources for Indian. Look for the Indian model lineup to explode.

Interesting insomuchas Polaris has been funding the development of both brands with lots of common tech.  Victory just never quite caught on.

That is too bad about Victory. I know that they had not developed the following, like most others. Too bad, but, as Bankerdanny said, that will free up more resources for the further development of Indian and Indian seems to be picking up a lot of followers and demand. Sad, to see a brand like that, go down, because it decreases the selection that buyers have.

Where Indian has been heritage/aesthetic driven, the Victory brand has been more performance oriented.  They funded a land speed bike and a Pikes Peak bike (Project 156).  I did like that about them.  Indian has also done some performance R&D with its new flat track race bike (developed in less than a year) with their new Wrecking Crew team, so maybe hope is not lost.

I think it will more than likely free up money for the ever expanding side-by-side 4-wheeler market.
Which is sad - I never really liked the spaceship look of the touring bikes, but I know several former HD owners who love their V-bikes.

I'm not only not surprised, I was expecting it. As soon as the new Indians were released I knew that Polaris would dump the Victory brand as soon as they possibly could. No loss, they were ugly POS' as far as I'm concerned. Long live Indian! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was amused when the NHRA pro stock Buells overnight became Victorys. I thought it was OK because none of those bikes are anything we can buy anyway. Maybe Matt Smith will be riding a pro stock Indian now.

Just my $0.02, but I doubt Victory was ever competing with Indian.  They are two different v-twin customers.  Unfortunately, Victory never moved a significant amount of product, and Polaris probably felt it was better to focus their investment on Indian where sales were more successful.  With Indian poised to do well in this year's American Flat Track Racing (formerly known as AMA Flat Track Racing), focusing on Indian seems to make sense.

They didn't compete much for sales (probably not at all as far as the Chief vs the Vision), but internally they competed for R&D dollars.

Hmmm. Bad news for my old mate who drives the truck that takes the Victory exhibition bikes and staging to the various shows here in the UK. He just got married last year, and life was good doing short hauls, staying in hotels, and wandering around bike shows until it was time to load up and move on to the next one. I bet he's not the only employee who'll be affected by this. Sad, but you can't keep flogging a dead horse.

On the plus side, another mate has one in his shed that he has customised - he usually does Harley's and has a good rep - that he offered me a while ago. I was tempted because Victorys are still quite a rarity over here, but it was too much money (plus I'm still not sold on agricultural equipment  ;D). Could be an opportunity to buy an American V Twin to store away for my dotage... ;D

If you're not sold on agricultural equipment, why are you restoring POS Pommy oil distributors? They make Harley's look like space ships! Don't buy a Victory if you want an investment Martin, they're a nothing bike. Better you go find a Ducati 916, they're cheap now, but in years to come they'll be like Vincent Black Shadows. If you buy one, don't ride it for God's sake, they're poorly engineered and fragile, but "collectors" don't ride their bikes, so it's not an issue.......... ;D

Ha ha, quickest bite I've had in a long time. Should never have given up fishing! ;D

I agree Terry, they are a nothing bike, although the one I'm on about does look pretty (ok that might be a bit of a poofta description, but there's nothing wrong with that). Don't know about 916s, sportsbikes don't really do it for me, but I got close to buying a Monster 900 Dark a few months ago. I think I will probably have one at some stage, before I'm grown up enough to ride a Harley... ;D

Nobody.  I know they were giving their brand new Octane model to custom builders to show what could be done with them.  Those are the only ones I've seen aside from stockers at IMS.  None out in the wild.

Maybe you buddy will be the driver of the new Indian truck..
I bet this decision has been in the works for years.. But they were guaging the response to Indian before proceeding..

He could drive the race team truck.  They'll need a couple for hauling 6 bikes and spares.
