Hey Ron...no, it was dry when I road the bike. I havent yet checked all the wiring, it was Kawasaki's all last week!

Yeah, then I'm going with the cal's theory that it was vibration causing a short to touch metal, too.

Since it happened after the engine went back in, maybe a wire from the alternator was stretched or pinched along the way. Or perhaps something associated with the starter.
Great looking bike, great color. Are there more photos of the finished product somewhere?

Hey Steve....yes, I will check all the wiring. Dont know how it could be associated with the starter, though?

Great shots.
Being here on Maui I do miss the diversity of the bike scenes on the mainland. Harleys and tupperware bikes (and other similar rides) reign. Nothing wrong with that but the general lack of variety can get boring.

Sorry, but if you are looking for sympathy, you're in the wrong place! You live in paradise and have an awesome bike, you know how many guys would kill for that?
Most of the bikes I see on a daily basis are not vintage, when I do spot one it catches my eye.
So it's not totally different here as far as the bike scene.

Same here...pretty unlikely to see anything but Harley unless you are at a happening...like hanging with me and Ekpent. Hell, most old bike guys I know rarely show up on their old bike..."but the goldwing is so comfortable"...really?

Same same here, I'm convinced that the only people who really ride their bikes regularly are Harley owners. I'm out on the road most weekends on any one of my bikes and apart from the odd BMW rider, I hardly ever see another SOHC4, Z1, GS etc. Of course I ride a fair way from the city limits, so maybe the vintage bike posers are staying a little closer to home? I did see one mint looking CB750 on the highway on my way back to Canberra last year, but it was getting loaded onto a tow truck...........

Not the case here, I think I see more sport bikes. Seems the vintage bikes are not used for daily riders...

Yeah, I forgot sports bikes, I see a few hooligans on sports bikes on my daily commute into the city, and a heap of them flocking to Phillip Island for the Moto GP and Superbikes, but rarely see one out on country roads where I like to ride, it's mostly older guys like me on their Harley's.

Hey Guys....was a beautiful day yesterday [82*F] in Central Texas yesterday, cut out of work early and rolled the K4 out of the garage.

At the end of last season, the battery I had in it was not holding a charge, so about a month ago I installed a Scorpion AGM in it. With winter here, hadnt ridden lately but was happy when the K4 cranked strongly and fired up after 20 seconds or so, always a good day when that happens! Geared up and went for a nice hour long ride through the hills. I've put just over 800 miles on the motor since the rebuild and could not be happier with the reliability and performance of it. It idles nicely and pulls strong when the controntrol is rotated!
BTW - I did end up finding the electrical gremlin - the bullet connector for the the front brake light switch had come "uninsulated" and would ground out occasionally. I currently have it taped up but need to make a proper repair.

Sounds like fun. Y’all been getting much rain? Everybody around here is sick of the rain. Can hardly get any riding in. People are starting to refer to Houston as Seattle. I told my wife the other day that at the first sign of a decent weekend I’m heading to the Hill Country.

Quick update, been nearly four years since the motor was rebuilt because of the hole blown in the case!

Still running great and I love riding it!

I just read through this old thread the past few days as I have a few projects I picked up a couple weeks ago. Good job on it Steve.
It's still cool up here in NH, my K5 is getting a tank derusting and itching to get it out for a ride and so my storage room is busting at the seams with the K5 and K6 in there with other junk.... so an expansion is underway, from 10'x11' to 11'×36', so I have room to work on my bikes. I'm about to tear down the 836 chopper motor I got in the purchase to give it a good inspection and clean up inside and out. After reading of the rod cap I'll be checking everything inside. It'll be going into my K6 that I set up new from the crate for my oldest brother and was sold to a friend of mine who rode it @10 years then parked it and the mice moved in.....
And yes, the red and black paint will be removed and back to aluminum silver for the sleeper look that will come alive.

The louvers on the side of that motor are a curious addition. I can't think of a reason for them other than boredom.
