Deleting handlebar risers
« on: May 11, 2017, 09:36:06 PM »
I purchased a second top triple (just in case this goes horribly wrong) and I'm going to remove the handlebar risers this weekend .  Any words of wisdom?

On a side note, I did a search because this topic has to have come up before but got no results.  What would you have searched for? Or what do you call this procedure.  I tried "handlebar riser delete", "riser removal" and "clamp removal"

Try searching for shaved triple.

Perfect, that's what I was looking for.  Never would have thought of shaving them.

My pal did his guzzi triples with a hacksaw and a sanding block.
Guess when he first began modding he didn't have much in the way of power tools  ;D

I did it...It wasn't very difficult and I was Very Pleased with the result. I think I used a drill, hacksaw and metal file.

I am somewhat concerned with integrity of the triple when done, which is why I bought the second triple.  In the end, I'll have a couple of huge holes and I'm wondering if and what problems that might lead to.  Safety first! Am I right?

From the linked thread, this is close to what I'm aiming for.

Might even try to do the LED mod. :-)

I may delete the gauge mounts as well because I've mounted a GPS speedo/tach into the headlight bucket.  So long as the structure isn't compromised.

If you're concerned about a making weakend tree, why not purchase a stronger better cooler tree?  Swap a lower too!

Mostly because , cooler is subjective.  I'm guessing you mean billet aluminum or some such.  I'm trying to avoid that as I think it's less cool.

If I could fabricate my own tree I'd be down for that.  Speaking of that, if this does go bad I may try to mold a newer stronger one from the remnants, assuming the failure will be a hairline fracture I catch before I kill my self.

Turns out, it was much ado about nothing.  It was a lot of filing and sanding but went pretty good.  I did end up welding the holes closed for cosmetic purposes but any concerns with structure were taken care of also.  Now to figure out how to remove the rest of the powder coat with out removing anything else.

I wish I had taken some before pictures.

I cut mine down just enough for rivets, as wasn't keen on removing too much metal

Haven't made that decision yet.  Odds are, I'll paint it with the tank.

Wish I had seen this yesterday.  That looks awesome, and would have saved be about 4 hours of filing.

I left the front lugs, as I intend to use this gauge mounting plate, the missing gauge is a Koso electronic speedo

That's a good looking cluster.  I'm putting a gps speedo /tach into the headlight bucket.

I felt a little bit bad for destroying a perfectly good powdercoat but the truth is I'd have had to anyway as the powdercoater had covered some critical areas, like the handlebar cradle (or whatever you'd call the knurled crotch that the handlebars get clamped into)
