I don't think there is a less expensive option when it comes to a cooler/adapter.  The man with the Wallaby has the best package.  So to speak.

Sorry mate, I don't want to add more misery to your terrible life, yeah, it'll fit the CB650 which is just a bigger version of the 500/550 anyway, isn't it? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Why is it that no thread is complete without reference to Terry's package?  (Which his wife states is definitely over-rated!) :D :D :D

My wife wouldn't know a good thing if she fell on it and it gave her two handsome sons, ha ha! Seriously though John, she's been with me for 27 years now, so she can't be as disappointed in my package as Martha told me (in the shower this morning) that she was with yours, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Spin-on oil filter adapters with oil cooler outlets
« Reply #108 on: April 13, 2006, 07:13:56 PM »
Anybody got any sources? I once had a cooler adapter and later got a spin-on setup that fit it. Great combo: cooler oil, and the filter kept the oil gold-colored for 1000 miles. Anybody out there still making this stuff?

oil cooler mount for cb 500K1
« Reply #110 on: April 22, 2006, 03:08:08 PM »
I've got an oil cooler that I'm about to fit onto my 500, but there are no real places that seem to have been made for this type of attachment (to the frame). does anyone have pics of how theirs is connected?

many thanks,

hym

I have seen them zip tied to the upper part of the downtubes.  me personally i think zpties are only a temp fix so I am gonna go with bolts and rubber dampers.

This probably doesn't help much since you likely aren't interested in welding any brackets to your frame, but since mine hasn't gone for powdercoat yet, you can see whereabout you could use a u-clamp around the downtubes to fasten the cooler. It doesn't take anything very large as the cooler hoses should be fastened as well and will help hold things in place.

CB650 Oil Cooler

Has anyone got a good oil cooler setup for a 1982 cb650?  Seem to be running pretty hot after re-jetting.

Thanks,

Doug

You sure you're not running too lean?  Otherwise, Terry in Australia (http://search.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_W0QQsassZnetscroungerQQhtZ-1) sells them, but I'm not sure if he has them for 650's.  He does for 750's & 550's, and I think the 650 & 550 are similar.

Could an oil cooler restrict oil flow???
« Reply #115 on: May 11, 2006, 07:36:29 AM »
Greetings SOHC hedz!  My recent project was aquired with an oil cooler on it.  While getting it tuned up, I started studying the oil cooler.  The lines going to/from the radiator don't look to be more than a 1/4" or so.  Def smaller than the 1/2 lines going to/from the oil tank.  How big are the lines on most oil coolers?

I'm really thinking of getting rid of the cooler.  I want to mount hiway bars on the bike, and the cooler is getting in the way.

I think they are probably 3/8 hoses, that's pretty standard for oil coolers. There's some restriction for sure, but at system pressure it shouldn't be a problem. IMO, having cooler oil with some minor pressure drop is better than having super hot oil that's thin like water with the resultant low pump pressure as well as reduced lubricity.
The oil tank lines are larger because they are at very low pressure, the engine feed line is probably under suction.

...what are you guys opinions on now much an oil cooler should lower the oil temp.  So far I can't tell any difference my 78F that has no oil cooler, and this bike that does have one.  Both oil temps seem to top out at around 175...

As a rule, ANYTHING in line is a restriction.
Weather is be a oil cooler, a fuel filter, line lock in a brake system (racecar) , etc..
How much of a restriction is up for debate, but it is still something that wasn't their before..

Just a different way to look at it...

How hot is hot, oil cooler
« Reply #121 on: June 20, 2006, 12:22:56 PM »
I ran my CB550 on a track event and I was amazed at the heat she generates

This is the first time a ran a SOHC as I just purchase the race bike the other week

I tried to check the oil after coming off the track and I couldn't touch the dip stick it was soooo hot

Do they all run that hot ? I was amazed at the temperature the engine gets too

Is this common, I believe the previous owner ran a 10W40 oil

Should I be looking at the grade of oil or an oil cooler ??

Could there be something else that maybe wrong, she ran great

Any thoughts ?

Thx, Brian

Brian,

I just came across an oil cooler kit online and was wondering the same thing.  I'm sure that these engines were designed to run hot, but would it be better for the life of the engine to have a cooler on?  Hopefully someone with some knowledge stops by  :)

They are air cooled and oil cooled so they do get hot. You have to look at the temps you are running in. If it is around 60 or higher, and gets to around 90 or more, you can and probably should if you idle for long periods or run hard, run 20-50 weight oil. The rotella T is good stuff and is most synthetics as long as there is no moly or energy conserving additives.

I dont have the temps for the normal range of operation. Others with the 500/550s should have that, check with twotired, he most likely has something on the oil temps. An oil cooler is good but if your temp is below 60 degrees F, then it may cause your engine to not warm up properly.

I took a real quick peek at the Service Manual and didn't see any temps listed.  However, I would think the rules are different if it's a race bike than if it's a street runner.  Terry in Australia make oil coolers for both 750's & 550's.
