my 750 i bought has this oil cooler plate on it. i know this for sure is after market but i think its pulled from another honda motorcycle.

ive seen a whole line of honda motorcycles that have an oil cooler radiator on the frame behind the wheel with this oil cooler plate on the engine.

this is what mine looks like

i build custom PC and we pretty much do the same thing having a heat sink over the cpu die and circulating water over it that flows over the hot cpu diffusing the heat into the water then the water goes into a radiator with computer fans on it where the heat of the water is diffused over the radiator cooling the water in the radiator then circulating it obviously back into a radiator then back to the cpu or gpu or ram

the only thing i have a problem with is that if you trying to cool your oil at stop and go traffic you need to add a fan. the only way to optimally cool your oil is when you bike is moving when the cool air is going over the fins of the radiator. so pretty much only when your going fast.

and from what i get from water cooling computers is that its not only the air going over the radiator CFM (obviously the more is better) but how much total pressure is being exerted

so when you at a stop u need the air to move over the radiator but but but you cant put a fan straight on the radiator. you need a spacer/shroud maybe an inch between the fan and the radiator for the air to be able to diffuse

i think running a mutli fan rad is better leaving space for air to slip in around the fan when your going at speed instead of a cone style rad shroud with one big fan and using 1 big fan wont give you the total pressure of air through the rad even though the fan might be rated and moving a high amount of CFM

you cant decided or compare 2 fans just from the cfm. usually cfm is measure when mmh2o is at 0. that means the fan is tested in a open environment. now move that fan 6 feet from a wall or put something infront of it and the cfm fall dramatically. but knowing the total pressure from the fan with cfm

If that's right Lloyd, then why did Honda offer a factory oil cooler kit for the SOHC CB750's as an optional extra, along with steering dampers, dual disc conversions, etc, and why did all of the (aircooled) DOHC 750's, 900's and 1100's built after the first SOHC4's all come with oil coolers as standard?
And to placate those who get it in their tiny brains that things found on special purpose race machines also belong on ordinary street machines.
As I said, if you run at peak power and in hot weather all the time taxing the air cooling system, oil coolers can help the oil live longer.  Do you think an oil cooler would be of primary benefit in an arctic setting?

Regarding the DOHC4 diversional rathole BS.  The extra geegaws were a sales device.  It's called marketing toward competitor offerings or what the consumer demands, rather than what they actually need.  Joe Cool see a Yamaha with an oil cooler on it.  Gee, Yamaha's must be SO powerful that they need an oil cooler just like the race bikes have.  What? Honda does have one?  Well, it must be inferior or underpowered, then.

I heard a story about the yamaha reps comming to town. A couple rich kids had got the new XS's when they came out, and it gave them a reason to skip school, and in the interim, they pulled wheelies , launching at each stop sign in town they came across.

After a month or so they had both snapped /twisted/broken their drive shafts. Both the bikes had come from the same dealer so the reps came to trace it back to the factory and deliveries. It had nothing to do with that, it had to do with dumb kids taking the engineering of the bike to the limits every day, 12 hours a day for months at a time. Something had to give.

That's an old "Derale" kit mate, they worked very well, but I never liked the aesthetics of the radiator, and that one looks a little "tweaked". The adapter looks good though, and I think that one's got an inbuilt thermostat, which is a plus. You'd get 50 bucks for it on EBay, or maybe a little more. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I took a chance and bought this on ebay: 1986 YAMAHA FZ600 OIL COOLER ADAPTOR BOLT

It is a discontinued part.
This is OEM information for the part:
BOLT,UNION
90401-20089-00
Here are other bikes it was used on.
http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-90401-20089-00.html

If you cannot find one on ebay, I found this forum with reproduction ones advertised:
http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14561/postdays=0/postorder=asc/start=15.html
Their part number is : HCP3165. it is about 2/3 of the way down the page for around $20.
I did a test fir on my spare engine case, without the filter element, and it seems to work fine. I have yet to test it with the filter element, but if it will not go together, I can grind a little length off the head to make it shorter.

This was for my CB650

Why would you post a picture of an inter-stellar tachyon generator on an oil cooler thread?

Because it improves MPG?

Because it reverses time and therefore the damage caused by overheated oil.

My CB 750F came stock with a OIL Cooler? did someone say Honda street bikes did not need them? ............................................CB750E-2600014 and CB750GE-1000014         F2
new cylinder head with bigger valves (34/31mm i/o 32/28mm), larger combustion chamber, larger carb mount rubbers, stronger cam chain, new camshaft, harder valve springs, new retainers, cotters, new pistons compression ratio 9/1. New rod big end bolts and bearings, harder clutch springs, additional fins on crankcase, larger fins on oil pan, "oil cooler" - finned plate between oil filter case and engine. Final drive 15/43 or 14/43.
CB750E-3100001 F3 http://www.hondachopper.com/engine/engine_mods/modifications.html   B&M Oil cooler brought down my Temp from 230* to 195* and helped with some detonation issues under Boost i was having, I made this setup myself and does not leak or sweat a drop in 7 years ! COOL IT BABY!!!

Have you got any more pics of that Goldwing mate? I've just bought one, and am looking forward to some "Land Yachting". ;D

That's really irrelevant.  The point is that oil coolers look pretty and make the owner feel they did something good for their bike, kinda like big fat tires, knee dents, pods, clubmans, removing fenders, and flat black paint.   ;D  ;D  ;D
Don't cha know you just need an oil cooler on it to make the bike look like it is race bred and have other people think you modded the engine to make more HP.

I crack myself up sometimes.  ;D ;D ;D
