Would need a couple more thousand to beat the current record in the Guinness Book.

I could hear that music festival from my house. Still waiting to hear from many friends that were there. Praying for everyone involved, and for all my coworkers that had to see this horiffic event go down.

Then of course the basterd shooter kills himself.

The politicians are having their usual field day with this.  That should be a crime too.  Like "no you mooky twit!  ya don't get to pivot your career on tragedy like this."

I had to call my son this morning to make sure they were OK. He lives within 3 miles of Mandalay Bay. They were OK which I figured they would be. They hardly ever go near the strip and why would they be there for a country western event that late on a Sunday night when they had to work the next day.....but you just never know for sure so I called. What really sickens me is all of the BS I have been reading on facebook and the like of people shouting about how it was Isis or Liberals or Trumptards or even O.J. What a bunch of total SH!T. This country is falling apart right before our eyes and I can't for the life of me understand why people can't pull their heads outa their a$$es and come together on this or anything else. The whole world is watching and are seeing what the division in this country is doing. I'm sure there are others that feel the same way as me but there are just way too many people that don't and will let everything around them crumble to stand their ground. I am a proud American that enlisted in the Navy back in the 70's towards the end of the Vietnam war and I bleed red blood and I stand for our freedoms and liberties. I will always stand and salute my flag because I am a proud American. I don't agree with all of this crap of blackballing Kap for not standing but I do believe it is well within his right to do so. I think it was poor judgement on his part the way he carries out his protest but if he believes that's what it takes to make a change then more power to him. I'm not a religious man but I pray people will come around to my way of thinking and get this country and the rest of the world on track before something irreversible happens. To hell with greed and corruption!!......Breeze out!

So far, so good. Friends are ok. We train for mass casualty events like this all the time because Las Vegas has the potential to be a huge target. The unit I'm on does screenings for large events like this (edc, NASCAR, political rallies) before gates open and during, but unfortunately crazy people will find a way. Police, fire, private ambulance, hospital staff and especially civilians were amazing in preventing further casualties. Mrbreeze, where abouts  does your son live? I am also close to Mandalay Bay.

Deeply sorry about this catastrophe, and what sh1t like this can do to the fabric of a country.

Upside ?? The medical response seems to have been above reproach.

Sorry I can't add any more. It takes me back two years to Paris.

But then... what do we know? Maybe the guy felt threatened and decided to defend himself.

Could I ask a question from someone who may know the technical aspects. And please be assured the human aspect of this tragedy is very much on my mind.  From what we know this shooter was on the 32nd floor of a hotel, and the venue that was his target was across the road and down a little. Does that distance not approach the limit of effective fire of modern day assaust rifles  or is it comfortably within their capabilities ?

I have not heard what caliber was used yet. There was some rumor that it was .308 or 30-06, both of those would be more capable of mass destruction from the shooter's "roost". While the more common .223 could travel that far it would not have much knock down power at long range. His 32nd floor position was an advantage to him because the shot is going down hill, the opposite direction it would be more difficult.

Just so you know, there is NO classification of guns that are called "assault rifles", that is a name made up by politicians. By definition any gun used for this attack IS an assault rifle because it is used to assault people. Assault rifle is interchangeable with "scary looking gun" to stir up emotion in the uninformed.

That was a fair question IMHO about this sick event.

On a side note I hear that the blood drives for the victims is going very well, but the more rare blood types are still needed. I'm taking my type O- but down to donate this Saturday. If any of you guys or gals are O- (O neg) they can use your help now!

While this is an unspeakable act, please don't let it drift off into a political argument. Try to remain focused on facts and the victims, please. Inflammatory posts of ANY kind will quickly be removed.

Noted.

My question stems not from any perverse curiosity about firearms (which I loathe) but more about the advance planning this b'stard performed. Like how confident could he have been that at that distance that his rain of fire would have been so lethal ?

Sadly, I'm O Neg, but a long way away.

It's pretty easy for a firearm afficianado to know that X weapon with Y round is lethal to Z yards.
Whatever he used wasn't legal, even if it started out as such.

Edit: unless it was a gat crank or bump fire stock. Way outside my area of expertise, but I'll sync the hell out of your 550 carbs!

So far the number of weapons reported was staggering.  Two windows in the hotel room were busted out.  More guerilla supplies found at the suspects home.
Some things don't make sense.  Retired accountant, made positive life aquisitions and has a girlfriend in the Philippines.  Why?   :-\

People keep asking why this shooting happened? Why would someone do this. Because people = #$%*. Even when things are looking up, there's one guy who #$%*s it up. What's interesting to me is that we still don't get it. Guns, cars, knives, whatever it may be, people kill people. Politicians or lawmakers using this tragedy is just naive and shows the convenience of using evil to push an agenda. Let these families grieve and let the innocent lives be laid to rest.

Kev -to respond to your technical question:

Shooting from that elevated a position mostly effects the aiming point. At 32 floors up, he’s about 350’ higher than his intended target. That means he actually needs to aim lower than his hold point unless he’s already done the trigonometry and adjusted his sights.

The “distance” is neglible. A 5.56mm round traveling at 3200 fps at the muzzle produces a lethal energy (to humans) out to about 500 yds.

Step up to a .308 caliber weapon, and you’re generating a velocity of about 2800 FPS, and sufficient human lethal energy out to about 1,000 yds.

The vertical drop doesn’t adversely effect the horizontal range, but it does provide some insight into the maniac’s preparation. A “skilled” marksman would not choose such an elevation knowing the effects of drop and adverse wind drift. Instead, he’d probably have preferred to be within the first 5-6 floors. A much easier sighting solution. Add into all that, this mope apparently modified his weapons into full automatic, and that reduces their reliability and effectiveness (accuracy) further.

Moral of the story? You can not understand the mind of a sick individual and his choices tell me, he was someone with a deranged purpose and no particular training or skill. Spraying hundreds of rounds into a crowd will produce evil results, but it does not make it an effective plan. And shooting from a distance is mostly devised as a plan for “results”.

Yes, my immediate thoughts were the same. The police chief said he was obviously trained and had experience. That was a bizarre statement to me. I think he had multiple guns setup on tripods and as they overheated or ran out, switched to the next. Maybe even fired two at a time. We will see.
