Is this a 550 wheel?
« on: November 04, 2017, 04:08:24 AM »
I picked up this wheel as part of the latest haul. I thought it was a 550 wheel, but something about it just looks different. The brake backing plate seems larger/flatter than the early 500/550 style, but not the same as the later K bike style.
It has a 37T sprocket, which indicates 550. I'm not good at knowing where/how to measure rim width, and there are no stampings in the rim to indicate size.
 Is this a 550 or 750 wheel?

It is not 750, brake plate is a totally different looking casting, plus sprocket side is very different.  37 tooth would be nearly un-rideable on a 750 as stock is 48.  Maybe 350/400? cb450? would be very impressive.
If it works good, it looks good...

I think the 500 and first gen 550 rear hub had four ribs, the later 550 the ribs were different and used a narrower axle spacer, also the brake plates don't swap into the different ones?ill try and dig up a photo of the later 550 type, can only find the early type.

No, it is not a metal arrow...it is an indentation on the actuating lever, red, reddish orange paint in the indentation with a corresponding mark on the shaft support boss... also painted....
And I don’t see it...
...where do people come up with this stuff...

Actually, the mark is on what’s called the brake plate...
