Eureka!
While investigating the idiot lights (thanks cal) I discovered the culprit; my cheap Chinese switches!

The kill switch had a ground wire running to one side of it, and the starter button had a switched power wire running to it, so I just swapped those two pins on the plug and VIOLA!

That’s a load off my toad

Well gang, I’ve got all the things hooked up, fuel in the carbs, spark from the plugs, and air from the atmosphere. What else should I check if it’s not firing up?

It is cranking, but not even so much as a cough or a sputter.

I have a Pamco ignition installed, and I have it set up per the instructions on their website. I also have new coils, plugs and wires. I set the valve timing back when I put the engine together, it’s possible that I messed that up, I’ll check it out.

Tested for spark on plug #4, it is firing appropriately, with the “1-4” F mark. As for the points cam, this ignition plate replaces the original cam with this aluminum disk, with magnets in it, about 90* apart. The installation instructions indicated that the two magnets should be at 3 o’clock and 6 o’clock with the cylinder 1-4 mark at 12 o’clock, if that makes sense.

I think I’ve got that right, so maybe the timing is advanced or retarded too much?

Ok I figured out the problem, I had the petcock switched to ‘off’ instead of ‘reserve’

That’ll get em every time

Well done!!  But let's be honest, that was NOT the "first" startup after 30+/- years.  No way.  Fuel was already cycled and it fired like you had been running it a short time before.   ::)

yeah but "2nd startup after 30+/- years" doesn't sound as impressive :P

I had run it for maybe 20-30 seconds before I stopped to setup and record the video

Edit: I have given the video a more appropriate title

Around the time that I started this project, I bought 4 vacuum gauges to make a carb synchronizer, so I think I’ll work on building that.

I’m going to make one sort of in the style of Dino’s from Hack a Week. His 750 build was one of my favorite pieces of recorded media ever, as a side note.

Speaking of YouTube videos, the Saturday Sessions build from Bike Exif is also very good, nice editing, funky music, and a surprisingly thorough examination of the process. The guys in the videos do a lot of things that drew criticism, but overall, a pretty good watch

Yeah, gotta love watching a nice original bike get ruined and then seeing it smoke like a 2 stroke at the end.

Maybe check out this channel, mostly Kawasaki's and they don't get super in depth tech wise, but they really do beautiful, non-invasive work

That's a common fault.  Your use of the word "wiener" on the other hand...  unforgivable.  LOL

Allow the compliments to make you feel good.  Don't forget that that's the ONLY reason to be working on these old bikes.  It won't make you rich.  It won't make you cool.  Women couldn't care less.  Long hours in the shop don't do much for your health or your physique.  The only reason to do it is because it's fun.  If it isn't fun... figure out how to make it fun!

Happy birthday belatedly wished. Congrats on getting the bike going. I think I have a good rear rim, but it is currently on the bike, a 550. Unfortunately, I cannot be as generous as Calj as I can't give it away given I bought a replacement.  Rim is pretty good, the spokes on the rim not so good...figure you just want a good rim, right?
Presuming your requests on the forum didn't net another...or you didn't hit up Bill's batcave yet.
