Helped my buddy find/ship this '58 for his collection.  It delivered to my house on Tues, so I'll be "testing" it for the next week or so.  Bought it from an old guy on the Corvette forum, he owned it for 45 years!  He never got around to painting it but it in great shape mechanically [350 V8, 4 spd]

Got a bid for paint yesterday...$10K!  Taking it to another shop tomorrow morn for another bid.

Find a good fiberglass guy, some of the old vettes have bad (old) bond joints that need special repair not just a bondo job.  I would love to own one, I'm told they drive like any old car or truck. I wouldn't know but would love to find out.

Drove it on my favorite road!

The Corvette at the top of my list of what Corvette I would like to own, chrome bumper Stingray convertible with the egg crate side vents. Just a plain 350 4-speed would be great.

Bingo!  My buddy knows a boat guy, he restore cars in the winter when the boat business is slow. Brought it over to him and he bid $6800 for the complete paint job [interior portion as well]. It's going into the shop on Wed and will take about a month.  We are also going to send all the chrome to Houston for replating while it is removed for paint.
This car will be Tuxedo Black with Silver coves.

I had $1000 in materials and supplies to paint the "kit car from hell" Cobra, and that doesn't count everything it took to get it straight enough to paint, nor any time or labor. I was happy to be rid of it when I traded it for the dyno. :)
The biggest bang-for-the buck Corvette is the C4. I've seen them go for as low as $3k, in part due to crappy first gen EFI systems like the Cross-fire, which was nicknamed the Can't-fire, but the handling was a vast improvement over the earlier models.

Well first off the auto cancel for the turn signal switch went bad on my wife's 06 chevy cobalt but I get a call this morning from my wife who said the car just died with the dash saying "engine disabled" and she couldn't get it to start again. Fortunately she was already in a parking lot and just coasted into a spot. While she was shopping for groceries I got there and it started right up although with a check engine light. My code scanner only saw 1 error code and that was P0601 which seems to mean the PCM, ECU ... what ever you want to call it is calling it quits or possibly a bad ground at the PCM or voltage issue. I cleared the code, started it back up and drove it home with no issues but I'm letting it cool down and drive it again to see if it happens to me like it did my wife.

My '70 Corvette came stock with 4 wheel disc brakes, Dave.
And they are power, so more than adequate.
Guessing a very low percentage of 1970 American cars came with 4 whl disc.
That '58 Corvette has 4 whl non-power brakes!  Totally inadequate!!

My buddy has been a little bored lately, he typically travels a lot but that stopped when the virus hit three months ago.  So he's been shopping online for his Classic Car collection!  He found this '71 Blazer on eBay, he doesnt have an acct so he asked me to bid on it.  I waited til the last 10 sec of the auction and placed a bid and won it for him, was a very good deal! It was in AZ so it was an easy, quick ship to get it to Texas.
Appears it was a total restoration but the guy stopped after it was about 95% complete.  It has nice, new paint [ORANGE!], new bumpers, grill and a Chevy 350 crate motor. Interior is real nice.
It's 4 whl drive with a 3 speed automatic. It needed some wiring [headlight blinked when the left blinker was turned on!], the HEI was shorting out, water pump was whining and the starter motor was grinding.
I've been super busy back at work and have a landscape project going on at home, so I know a local guy that is real good with the Classics and let him go through it.  Got it back yesterday, did a 25 mile test drive this morning and it's now running great!
The top will come off and stay off, we just had it on since it had been raining last week.  This will be his Ranch Truck...

Just for grins, I searched on Craig's list for C4 'vettes, and this '88 35th anniversary edition showed up right across the highway from me. :)

The biggest bang-for-the buck Corvette is the C4.

There are getting to be a lot of cheap, beater C4's out there for sure, but the real bang for the buck Corvette is the C5.  You'll have to pay a little more, but you are getting a lot more car for the money.  And there are some real bargains out there if you look.  Even I get tempted once in a while, and I need a Corvette like I need another hole in my head.

I took a look, and the C5s have indeed gotten cheaper. I saw from $7500 from early high mile examples to $22K for a late Z06. The same place with the $1800 C4 has a C5 for $8500. I know the seller, and a couple of years ago he told me he would never deal with a C5 again after a trans-axle problem with a car he had bought from an auction; it was cheap until he had to have the trans repaired. ::)

Drove it on my favorite road!

The Corvette at the top of my list of what Corvette I would like to own, chrome bumper Stingray convertible with the egg crate side vents. Just a plain 350 4-speed would be great.

Hard to beat it for the money, Danny.  Mine has a "plain" 350 4 spd, certainly not fast by modern standards, but a blast to drive.  Has independent rear suspension which makes it fun to drive on the twisty roads around here. C'mon down and I'll let you drive it!

Former president of the local Corvette club has exactly that car. A blue '72 with the chrome bumpers and vents. It's alright to drive. Not much different than my '81 except a bit quicker.

They're a fun drive as long as the suspension is completely sorted. I did everything on mine except the trailing arm bushings and it's so squirrely in the corners.

My least favorite thing about my '81 is that the interior is soooo rattly and creaky and the steering wheel is falling apart and is sticky. I'm sure it was fine when new, but it did not hold up well. Compare that to my '79 Mercedes 240D I posted up earlier, it's sooo solid inside.

And in regards to the brakes, I think it's more the maintenance of them, rather than the stopping power. If left to sit for any amount of time, they piston sleeve can start to corrode and cause them to leak. My '81 sat for a year or two and that was all it took to completely destroy all four calipers. I didn't know it at the time so on the drive home I lost front brakes coming down the H3 freeway which has a decently steep grade. The rear brakes gave out shortly after I replaced the fronts. I didn't replace them with stainless sleeved calipers so one is already leaking.

The body design is the biggest difference, dont care for the later model C3's, dual chrome bumpers makes the car IMO.

Pulled the H6 engine from my Subaru.
It needs new valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, CV axles, and due to have the timing chain and gears inspected.
215,000 miles on it and still running strong, but leaking a lot of oil.
Only 59 bolts to remove to get the timing chain cover off. And I'm supposed to use Fujibond to put it back on. I'll probably just use the Hondabond I already have in the garage.

I have the engine back in the dragster for the first time in over a year. Last spring it was just rebuilt and put back in the car with a cracked head. We sat out all year after three attempts to repair the head. I had new heads made to fit my rocker arm system and then the rocker arms didn't fit. My engine guy used rockers for another brand head. It always seems to cost another $3K and another, etc. Anyway we got it together and I have no confidence it will be good for a few hundred more passes down the track.
Since we're sponsored for the efi and can keep it, I learned to de-pin the wiring plugs and removed a lot of wire from the EFI that a dragster won't ever use. Next weekend our favorite track will be open so we're going to rock it once again. If nothing breaks.
Edit: I started it and it sounds a little rough. The EFI went emergency shutdown last time it ran (lost a pushrod) so it might still have a code or something.

Took delivery of yet another car for my good friends Classic Car Collection.  The '57 Bel Air has been on his list for awhile, a deal on a black one went south last month and then he found this one a couple weeks back.
It's a restomod with a 383 stroker crate motor with fuel injection.  Runs great!  Also has had some suspension mods, handles surprising well for the relatively large size and weight that it is.  My buddy is out of town so I'll just keep it awhile for "testing"!!

You gotta love modern cars with wide tyres, they make great steamrollers. Today I had to fill all the puddles on my nature strip (sidewalk) with crushed rock, because I got sick of looking at the ever deepening puddles caused by my son parking my old Ford Exploder on it.

Crushed Rock 16 Jun 2020 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I started with one cubic metre, but ended up ordering another cubic meter when I realised that there wasn't enough to stop that sinking feeling when I put some weight on it. I shovelled more and more crushed rock over the holes until it looked like I'd buried several bodies in shallow graves, then used my little Mitsubishi hairdressers car to compact the crushed rock a few hundred times, jumping out to shovel more crushed rock in place. Not pretty, but in Spring I'll cover it with top soil and plant some grass. By then it should be nice and firm.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Replaced the upper and lower weatherseals on the firebird...adjusting the window tilt/pitch fitment was a pure PITA.  I have a feeling the tracks are warped after 47 years :)

The interior isn’t original after looking at the documents provided...so we are going to do a slow conversion to black.

New door panels and hardware on order...the old ones are so brittle and delicate that they crack Just looking at them.
