who likes the smell of extreme pressure gear oil?me neither thats why Ive been putting off this pinion oil leak for 18 months,had rags ready for the spill thats bound to happen and threw them all into a plastic bag to dump at work,I had made a seal pry tool a while ago used it to do the timing case seal few weeks ago,it popped this one straight out.

Went to start up the ol Chevy last week but the battery was dead dead dead! I had put date of install on it - 7 years ago, so I am not complaining at all.  Found a battery on sale, this one has side terminals which I hate, but was 100 bucks out the door with a 3 year warranty.  Popped it in and after warming up for about 5 min, running good!

The battery is located behind the driver's seat in it's own little compartment, simple to access.



Out for a test drive.  This is a new bridge my friend had built after the old bridge was washed away in the deadly Cen Tex floods Fourth of July weekend...

Really nice color on that beautiful Corvette.

Thanks Per... the color is "Fuji Blue Metallic", I'm a "blue guy"!  Corvette, CB550 and Z1 are all blue.

Yes, it's just started to be convertible weather here, I dont drive it much in the hot summer months and the top rarely goes up.

Well not a vehicle but I drive it and spend hours doing so,we have a couple of acres I mow,got an old toro from 2009 XL440H rider mower,every few years I pull the deck off clean pressure wash and paint it,keeping it solid I hope?

Dave…. What paint? Whatever I use on the deck underside seems to get blasted off almost immediately!

It was a blisteringly hot day today so the deck dried really fast after the soap wash,I wiped it with mineral turpentine over then acetone,I let it get really hot in the sun then used this paint,its similar to rustoleum,splash of turpentine then sprayed it,used less than half of this 500ml can.

well seeing I painted the 44 inch toro deck I thought Id do the good little self propelled push mower I bought new over 15 years ago,only has a cheap pressed steel thin deck,its a "Victa" good old aussie brand with what I guess is the last of the decent briggs and stratton 190cc flatheads,this gets where the rider wont fit around the water tanks etc,fires up first or second pull every time.

What fuel do you use, Dave?  I only use ethanol-free fuel in all my lawn equip and have no issue starting them after sitting over the winter.

yeah non ethanol fuel Steve,our octane ratings are based on some different scale than yours,we have in non ethanol 91 which I use in lawn equipment,95 I use in the honda or also 91,and 98 which I use in my car,it carries a high initial advance,if I use less itll ping under any sort of half decent load,we have E85 ethanol fuel available and some sort of blends like 95 with 10% ethanol.

Yeah, figured as much.  I have two diff octanes available locally in the non-eth, but I dont pay much attn to the numbers, I've never had pinging in my bikes or Corvette.  Now a high compression engine would be different...

 I drained the coolant and fuel system on the Drag car. I pulled the rocker covers and backed off the rocker arms on the 5 most compressed springs so they won't be mashed all winter. I put the slicks inside in Christmas tree bags. The chassis has a wood frame to support the engine and trans weight with 8 casters on it.
 Next, I moved the race car tools from the trailer toolbox to the workbench toolbox. I'll decide which bike to put in the trailer before it goes to storage, I have big plans for two or three of them, so I'll need them to stay at home as will the EU2200 Honda generator.

 I pulled the front clip off of the 40 chevy, it has an annoying oil leak at the front of the motor, and it's a lot easier to work on like this. A few rigging jobs came in handy for a one-man team.
  The guy that made those fiberglass running boards on the 90's told me they would need paint because the black gel coat wouldn't hold up. 35 years and a few bumps and scrapes later they still look great.
 I bought those mag wheels in 1972, that's why I prefer aluminum over chrome.

I've always liked that style of American wheels.   

Pulling the front clip sure makes engine work easier, like installing headers. Back in the late 70's my buddy had worked at Ballard Auto Wrecking for a while and we could pull the front clip from the 68' Chevelle or the 66' Nova SS in 20 minutes. He knew exactly what wrenches we needed to do it.
My 85' GMC S-15 is not so much different from the 60's cars when it comes to working on them but I still have plenty of room for engine work because I hot rodded the original 2.8L V6. It's about 240hp which is more than a late 70's Corvette.
When I miss working on old cars I go out and work on my 72' MGB GT, it's unibody but the running gear was designed in the 30's.

 Yes, those are Daisy spoke wheels, we called them Coke bottle spokes. It takes 3 wire plugs, 2 hoses, a temp sensor and 10 bolts to pull the front clip, A bolt in the rocker panel spun and I cut it off, so I'll need to weld in something to screw into.
 I seem to remember doing it by myself, today it takes myself and that cherry picker. Once the AC is reconnected it will get more complicated to remove.

Don…. In 1971-2 I had a set of those American mags (15” X 6”) on an Alfa Romeo. After that another set on a Datsun 240Z. Still my favourite wheel! Great look8ng and they were a good deal too.
