Cracked side panel ?
« on: April 04, 2018, 08:20:10 am »
Though the left side panel is on my Yamaha XS1100, but is has a vertical crack that is approximately 4" long from the bottom on the panel.

What are you guys using for your repairs ?

Thought about using some JB Weld Plastic Weld with maybe some fiberglass backing, Any thoughts about this ?

I use fiberglass on the back side. Then you can use filler to deal with the front side of the crack.

A lot of guys like the super glue and baking soda deal. I have never done it, but many rave about how long it has lasted.

Since it is not a CB spare part you might find a good one for not much money.

The JB Weld plastic welder cement is the least effective of any of the products I have used. The best has been the Permatex version of plastic welder two part epoxy, followed by DURO and Devcon versions. The JB Weld type seems too slick to hold as well as the other brands, or something, but it isn't as good as the others. I like to groove the rear side of the crack with a rotary burr, and rough up the plastic back there with 80 grit paper, then mix and spread into the crack, allowing it to penetrate the crack by slightly spreading it, and then wiping the outer side of the crack to remove any excess there. If done properly, it won't break there ever again. You can reinforce it with some light fiberglass cloth, but I haven't found it necessary.

I've had real good results using hardware store 2 part plastic epoxy in the same kind of dispenser in your picture.  Groove the crack out with a dremel on both sides, sand around the area with 80 grit, mix, apply, wait 30 minutes, sand with 80 grit on a block..good as new.  Solid fix.  Cheap.

Fixed it !

Used some ABS cement and 1" wide fiberglass drywall tape on the backside of the panel and holding up nicely. Applied the cement first carefully spreading the crack using an Acid brush to lay down the cement. Then laid my tape over the length of the crack covering the tape with the cement again.
