Sports aircleaners
« on: June 22, 2018, 02:10:34 AM »
Hi everyone I have a question in regards my K7 when purchased it had no airbox and the carbs already removed . If I was to go to sports air cleaners how are the carbs surported? would seem a lot of weight on the rubber intakes and apart from harder to tune are there many downsides over the airbox. Hope you all have a good day.

You mean pods? Some find success running them but many don't. Get the steel dragon stacks and cover with foam filters. That will at least be closer to the intake type you are replacing. My racer runs like drink with that setup.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

The carbs can be supported just fine with only the rubber manifold insulators on the head. If you feel the need, you can fab up a bracket to hold them from the air box side too but it’s not needed.

Other than difficulty with tuning there isn’t really a down side. But also the only real upside is since the air box is gone it’s easier to remove the carbs for adjustment. You’re not going to gain any power.

Hush, not so loud, someone might hear you (and believe it!)
What would we do when no-one would use pods anymore? :o

Thank you for your input I asked the question only from the point that if I have to buy a airbox and fittings it may have been cheaper and easier to go down the pod path plus I like the look of them. For a power increase I might look at bolting on the spare turbo I have laying in the shed ;).

I had my stock carbs just hanging in the intake boots with pods. Engine had 836, ported head, cam and rather loud 4-1 so stock filter was not an option. Bike ran great with the jetting it needed. needles 1 step richer, main 140 (they had 147.5 when I opened and cleaned them last year-  re-jet to stock for my K2 stock build w airbox), stock pilot 40.

Today other carbs, Mikuni TMR32 and more need of flow. Carbs are strapped to the frame with rubber damper (opened fuel hose + oil hose, 2" long between so it sit tight without bouncing up, down.

My Smoothboores got home made brackets, thread insert found that had an easy press fitting in the holes on the sides of the carbs.

Stock carbs w pods today should get a strap as my TMR setup has.

Hi PeWe Thank you for your excellent info and for taking the time to do the photos I think I may go down that path.

cb750 carb boots are pretty beefy.  I feel like they can hold up well without extra support...other bikes like Kawasaki? not so much.  I just use a big loop of safety wire to support the Mikuni's on my Kawasakis.
If it works good, it looks good...

I had to dig into my pile of photos. :)
Photos of others bikes have helped me many times. These will hopefully inspire.

Secure carbs in frame will ensure that the carb rack is not bouncing up-down and cause a leak. The Mikuni's are heavier and will hang without support that also will help to get float bowls leveled as designed.
The Smoothbore stock carb boots were junk, way too soft and cracked before the end of the summer. Crappy boots were available back in the 80's too.
