Hi all,
I have been a long time member here and have had the pleasure of having been awarded bike of the month with my first cb550 build going on 8 years ago haha.  Unfortunately, most of the build pictures that I documented over the last 4 years building this bike are now gone (thanks imageshack).

About 4 years ago I started this project as a surprise gift for my brother.  I finally made a final push to get it done as a gift for his wedding day.  Here's a little bit about it, and please feel free to check out the more current pics on photobucket.

Life began as a broken, pieced together 76 super sport.  I quickly tore it down to pieces as most was not salvageable.  The frame has had a lot of work put into it, and all of it was done by me in my garage with my trusty tig.  All tube was hand bent by myself including all the manual machined and cnc'd parts for upper and lower shock mounts, caliper brackets, rear set mounts, etc .  The rear frame was cut off and the rest can be seen in the pictures.
The tank started life as a Royal Enfield.  Most of it has been cut apart and massaged into what you see now, once again all done in my garage. As for the oil tank, it was built from scratch as well.

The front end is a gsxr with a harley hub that i machined to fit, just like my first build way back when.  However, thanks to Cognito, the front steering stem conversions made it much more of a simple transplant.

Once i had the raw frame shape ready, i shaped a foam seat to follow the rail lines.  I must have spend a week's worth of hours hand sanding and bondoing the seat to get it ready for a female mold.  Once the female mold was made, it was time for several more weeks of sanding to get a smooth, consistant shape.  Finally, I laid it in carbon fiber and vaccuumed it to acheive what you see now.  I made a seat pan from carbon fiber and then had it upholstered in buffallo (i apologize for forgetting the name of the individual that upholstered the seat for me).

I did a top end rebuild on the engine and complete carb rebuild and tune to get it on the road.  I will leave it up to the new owner to build the engine if desired haha.

A big thank you goes out to Godffery for the rear rotor work and to Calj737 for providing me some awesome stainless engine bolts! Thank you very much gentlemen.  And thank you to this forum for the knowledge and support.

I apologize if you have all viewed these pics in my build thread, but they are all i have left...

Week's of work to get this far:

One-off underslung bracket and rod.  Also, Godffrey's fine rotor work:

Thank you all,

Jens

My brother and new owner on the bike made this worth it ten fold!

Thank you all,

Jens

Apologies to Jens and all members.

When I nominated this bike, I was unaware that it was no longer in Jens' possession -- now in his brother's possession.  Unfortunately, this makes the bike ineligible for Jens - and it should not have continued to the voting thread here as set forth in BOTM rules 1-2.  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,8929.0.html

I apologize for the confusion this has caused.  I am ZEROing out the vote, taking Jens' bike out of the poll (I will be happy to nominate it for his brother if he becomes or is a member for a future month), and proceeding anew.

SO, if you have voted, you will need to vote again!.

Drew_ATL’s CB750K Gold-Wheeled Bikini Special Built by Bill BentON Racing
AKA 'Captain Marvel'

Bike Summary:

Bill and I have a history going back about a decade, about 3 months ago I had the opportunity to pick up his '71 K1 for a very reasonable price and during what was to have been a basic restoration, Bill's vision took hold.

Piece by piece he has built something truly unique, a 70s style drag racer. I like it for numerous reasons, but mostly because it is one-of-a-kind. After we started to see her take shape with all of the gold + custom tank/side cover paint scheme, I realized that the perfect moniker was 'Captain Marvel' ~especially since that Marvel movie is due out in 2019 featuring a female lead.

Bill will have to chime in with the impressive list of improvements and his hard work.

I blame Bill, he made me love these bikes! :)

Drew or Bill,

Knowing Bill's reputation, I presume this bike is MORE than meets the eye in terms of performance.  Can you give a quick synopsis on what was done to the drivetrain to compliment the 70's drag racer paint?

beemerbum, Drew_ATL and Squirley:

I now regret not taking more photos before I began cleaning. I used wire wheels and sandpaper to get the frame as clean as I could. It was wiped down with solvents before I painted it with Rustoleum Appliance epoxy. Following Hondaman's advice, I ground off the shoulders on the right side motor mount. I was fortunate in that the wiring harness was original and intact. With a battery installed, everything, lights, turn signals, horn, etc. worked. I did have to remove the PO's switch relocation bracket from the handle bars and return it to its original location The PO had installed running boards with the shifter and brake pedal relocated. These were easily replaced with footpegs, pedal (a 1971 sans tab) and shifter via eBay. In assembling the clutch, I of course broke a corner of the lifter plate. The brake master and caliper were rebuilt using OEM parts. As everyone knows, the fershluginer c-clip in the master requires the tool from MotionPro. The crank bearing clearances were plastigaged and were within spec. The cam had some light surface rust on the lobes, easily removed with CocaCola and steel wool. The cylinders were honed and new rings (stock size) installed. I used a Vesrah gasket set which has proven leak free so far. In the interest of stock as a stove, I used a set OF JIS "Phillips" screws on the engine covers. The MotionPro T handle with JIS bits is the way to go with these screws. I was suspicious of the wanky way the oil pump turned so to be safe I ordered a re-built unit from CycleX. $86 worth of peace of mind. In the boxes and baskets that came with this bike was a bizarre 4 into 2 exhaust (rusty). Having come so far, I sprung for the repop HM300 exhaust from DSS($1495 plus $19 shipping). The carbs were redone by Hondaman. I rebuilt the petcock using non Honda parts fro CB750.com. That was a mistake and I have since installed a genuine Honda petcock. While I remember I had installed an aftermarket cam chain tensioner unit from CB750.com. I then got a letter from them advising that the rollers on their unit were occasionally disintegrating and offering a refund. A nice gesture on their part. Up come the cylinders and new head gasket to replace with genuine parts. This and other similar experiences proved the value of genuine parts. I did a lot of ordering from 4 into 1 as well as DSS. In all, my goal was to recreate the bike I first saw in Chicago, late '69 if memory serves. I was riding a Triumph when I spotted a red bike at a curb. I literally sat down to count exhaust pipes , look for oil (non visible), wonder at a disk brake and be amazed at a button that said "start".
