I'm not an expert in Ham radio, but from what I know that "1973 De la2vpa" seems to be his "signature" on the Ham radio environment.

My building administrator once told me something about ham radio. Somebody living in an appartment building asked for permission to install an antenna in the roof and lay the cable through the wall up to his appartment. He was granted to do it, but a few years ago the neighbours changed their mind and asked him to uninstall the antenna. The radio operator took the neighbours to court, and the judge granted him the right to keep the antenna based in the fact that Ham radio are considered a public service, invaluable in cases where other means of communication are down such in floods, hurricanes etc.

Good to see you are alive and well, our resident fireman!

What do I have to translate to you  steve D

This bit:

"73 De la2vpa"

Back then we all  where on the CB radio we have a number combination  instead of "all the best(73)"  - "love and kisses(88)"
You over in the stats  knowing the Q-code and the translates ,  then there are also the telegram short word  (code )
In my Ham sign LA2VPA The LA is  prefix for NORWAY,  the rest 2VPA is 2 the second number  the V is is as in the alphabet  and P  and A the same

It`s is built up something like thisthe prefix in Norway can have LA >LB it start from the zero and work up to nine   the number 2 can have one letter until the hole alphabetize been us then it start on the next letter whit an A >Z white 2 letters than its the same on the from A >Z three letters
For those that reads Norwegians , this link :  http://www.la1bna.net/operasjon/CWforkor.pdf
Hope its explaing  a little bit :)

Not a Ham, but in the 70's I worked as a radio design engineer for Racal in UK. We were designing a range of ECM (Electronic Counter Measures) systems (jammers to you and me).

To trial these things, which are pretty antisocial at the best of times, we were granted a temporary "test" callsign of G9BNP - the "9" meaning the temp bit I think.

Those were the days of illegal AM CB radios in the UK - we had a ball driving aroung the South East jamming them!!

"Us" -- like everyone in the forum.  I'd say we are all a bit weird.  But I consider "weird" a compliment. ;D
