Adding to the conversation about numbers and the idea that death by C19 is being underreported, the NYT published a report today that states that the there is a significant rise in deaths attributed to other causes in NYC (and other places). Death by heart disease, for example, is three times higher than normal. Other causes of death with higher numbers than normal include Alzheimer's, diabetes, flu, pneumonia, respiratory diseases, Parkinson's, dementia, etc. The article states that a contributor to higher death rates might be an unwillingness from some people to go to the hospital, but that could not account for the higher number of dead from "other causes."

We need to be prepared for another one since the origin is not stopped, open the pandoras box with small death will happen again.

Next Christmas, buy a respirator to ensure you can breathe next time if getting it or its cousin.

- A respirator build thread?
Big bore with twin cams :D

Yeah mate, just dont buy one from China, 95% of the PPE they've been supplying to hospitals around the world is useless apparently. It's almost like they've opened Pandoras box on purpose.......
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

so what does that even tell us?  That sick people die?  And that the more sick you are, the more likely you are to die?   Unfortunately, statistics is the only time numbers and math are a matter of opinion.  Mass fear is not going to save us.

Statistics aren't a "matter of opinion" but sometimes the analysis requires interpretation.

The goal is not to sow "mass fear" to "save us." Rather the report supports the assertion that the number of deaths is almost certainly underreported. Yes, sick people die. And there has been a huge number of sick people dying correlated with the onset of C19.

I'm sure that Covid-19 is a cause of other deaths.
People stay away from hospitals and a certain death getting Covid-19 from the staff.
Or hospitals are full, no treatment for others.

Statistics: Tell me what to prove and we will find a formula that show what you need.

Important for correct data must be correct data measured correctly and not miss anything. How to know that?
Time machine?

Like global temperatures.
Compare with the last ice age or a warmer period or something between? Ice ages comes and goes, that is how it has worked so far.
This to be verified with millions of years in the mirror that covers volcanic eruptions,  sun, earth wobble, other planets etc etc.

Today mostly compared with max hundred years back and temperature levels that fits the purpose.

I'm sure all other important statistics that are used as a leverage for an already decided agenda to convince people about anything is what we often can see.
Control and short term profit or just a need to give good living people a lesson which is the common envy.

It is easier for us old farts that have lived for a while.
We know best just before the brain get dementia, rotten up from inside  :D

Smog in major cities OK to compare today with the 70's.
It is better today!

It was interesting watching various news sources today accusing China's Communist Party as the money behind the riots all over America. I love a good conspiracy theory, and the current civil unrest seems to have moved Covid-19 off the front pages? Might just be a coincidence, of course...... ;D

Yes, of course everyone knows that statistical analysis can be flawed or biases, as can gathering data.

But data on the number of deaths is pretty easy to ascertain from hospitals, along with noted cause of death. And then correlate with yearly averages of the same data. This isn't rocket science.

Agree.
We will hopefully  know for sure years after when everything comes clean.
This can be a long period of minimum life until we have a vaccine we can trust before getting it injected into our bodies.

That's gonna be a whole 'nother kettle of fish. The anti-vaxxer crowd has joined others protesting closures, and they may increase the number of people who refuse vaccination no matter what. The outbreak of measles last year doesn't bode well.

When I was a kid in the 60's, most kids got measles and most laughed about it.
I had red itchy marks all over the body.

Nowadays something dangerous they vaccinate children against.

I had also water filled blisters everywhere as most kids,  dangerous today as well as a long lasting cough that could go on for 8 weeks or more.

All these seen as good to get when very young, worse when older. That's the 60's, maybe 70's too. These made us stronger was the consencus then.

Not TB that was gone here for decades ago but imported the last 20-30 years with sick poor people.

In my day, the black plague killed a third of Europe...

Measles killed hundreds, hospitalized tens of thousands, and inflicted encephalitis on around a thousand people per year. It was virtually elminated by 1980, and eradicated by 2000. Most would argue that's a pretty good thing. And then the anti-vaxxers came along.

I guess I'm a believer in scientific progress.

Well, New Zealand now officially has no active Covid-19 cases and we have gone 17 days without anyone testing positive.
The Government is about to lift all restrictions, other than keeping our borders closed - a good thing because we don't want any Covid filled Aussie's (aka "Terrys") coming over and stealing our women, food and SOHC bikes !
The economy is pretty sad, but we are on the mend !

This may explain the variety of symptoms and why people that are dying from various causes are being labeled as Covid-19 deaths.
