Some of you may remember me saying that this lockdown thing has driven me to take up paid gardening......I hate gardening

Today reminded me why

Chainsaw 1 knee 0

It has now been stitched back together and it's starting to hurt quite a bit

Must be time for a pint or two of my finest anaesthetic cider

Far Canal! And the worst thing (apart from the self butchery) is that you had to go to a medical facility (probably teeming with CV) to get stitched up! I think you better think about another line of work mate, that's not a good thing!  :o
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

My life has changed: all the SOHC4 owners (and some DOHC4 owners) stuck at home have all decided to send me their engine stuff, so I am waist-deep in engines and carbs(!)

The truck driver that keeps a bag of spare clothes in the garage across the street was given the lawn tractor there today. It had a flat tire and here he comes to borrow an air pump. Coool, that's OK but he's talking about masks doesn't have one, walks into the shop and just crowds my space. I backed away and put up the stop sign until he got the hint but WTF?

Though didn't read all of the comment, at least not yet. basically the same here. First I even heard about this virus thing, my Daughter sent me a text, saying something about the "Coronavirus" & at first, I thought it was some kind of scam or something. I haven't really kept up with the news that much or the regular stations & such, having been retired, for quite a few years now, the most I watch on tv is movies and some of the shows, about building cars and such as that. Otherwise, I am outside or out i the garage, doing something on a motorcycle or my Durango. Then, the next thing I knew, I was getting fully educated on the goings on. My Wife, Stepson & Stepdaughter work & suddenly, they are all laid off. Now, my Wife's work place, was still paying her, for 2 months of the time off. But, normally, she would get a fair amount of overtime, but, of course that stopped. I remember when I really realized just how bad this was. My Wife was at Walmart, picking up a few things (before she was actually laid off) & sent me photos, of the shelves, where Toilet paper was supposed to be. Those shelves were empty! Now, I am 73yrs old and have never seen anything like this. She was in Little Rock & I felt like the people there, were just  probably jumping the gun, on buying up all of that stuff. And I didn't really feel like people would buying things up so crazy like that. But Boy, was I ever wrong! It was just as bad here. It has been an inconvenience for us, But, I still had my Retirement checks coming, so at least we had that plus, we got one of those checks, to help us as well. Fortunately, my Wife was called back to work last Monday, on a modified schedule & starting tomorrow, she goes back to a 5 day work week, w/o the overtime,
so far. My Stepson & Stepdaughter worked at a restaurant, so they are still off work. But, that Restaurant IS supposed to open back up and recall the employees, as soon as he can. When this started up, instead of staying open & dealing with carry out, he shut down completely and said when he reopens, he is going to call back the employees. He's a good man and will do the right thing. Non of us or our family or friends, have had any issue with this Virus, Thank God.

I rememberthat back in the 1950's, we had to get a Vaccination for Smallpox & also getting a shot for polio, which eventually, was change to them putting it in a sugar cube, that we had to take. Now this (but, my Family & myself, have been able keep from having to deal with the virus itself.     Pray all stay safe & we get past this mess.

My wife's son-in-law got it at his job site around Mothers Day and/or tested positive.Looks like he may have passed it on to his wife or my wife's daughter also.Their 17 year old daughter has not been feeling well but their other younger son seems to be fine so far. Both have felt kind of sick but nothing overly serious and there getting over it now. He is a pipe fitter doing new commercial construction but they shut down the site as he was the second one to get it. My son works for the same company as a driver delivering materials but is fine when I talked to him Saturday.  These are the first people in my circle of friends to get it that I know of.

Restrictions have eased down here in Texas but we are still playing it as safe as possible, cases are still rising.
My office remains closed but that doesnt affect me as I'm rarely there anyway.
We did visit our good friends at their ranch, but maintained distance, no hugging.

Is it just me or are the women starting to look sexy with masks on?!

We got the Polio shots in school, My Mom always worried that mine didn't take because I didn't get the scar on my arm like all of the other kids had. She felt better about it when the sugar cube vaccines were sent out.
The media like to point out we don't have vaccines for some other diseases but those are mostly ones that we don't develop antibodies to. I read about pigs that were left on an island where ships often wrecked. They thrived and adapted, today the decendants of them are kept in quarantine for research because they have no virus in their systems.

Thought I'd include the link to current re-opening phases being suggested by the CDC and White House here:
https://www.whitehouse.gov/openingamerica/
Seemed to me to be fairly well detailed..with lots of provisions/safeguards for going back to stricter regulations..should a re-surge of Covid cases indicate.
Also seemed to me to be a much more constructive approach to dealing with the Covid situation..rather than focusing on-worrying only about increased numbers of test positives.
Feel that sooner or later this will pass (hopefully sooner)..and we can return to some sense of normalcy here.
[Hope you're doing well Bill.  Haven't chatted in a while]

Re: How has your life changed?
« Reply #195 on: May 20, 2020, 05:06:54 AM »
I've been "working from home" since late March, because I'm in the "high risk" category apparently. I love not having to drive to work at 05.15 every morning, find a carpark, fill my car up every second week, pay $17 per day in tolls, buy lunch, coffee, etc etc, then fight my way home in city traffic.

Management are talking about a staged return to work starting next month, but if we're not comfortable going back to work early, we don't have to go back until we are. My biggest concern is that most of the folks I work with travel to work on public transport, and once the majority of people are going back to work, I've no doubt there'll be another outbreak, because all the social distancing will go out the window when folks are crowding into train carriages in morning and afternoon peak travel times. I'll be happy if I don't go back to work for at least a couple more months.

Of course the down side is that I seem to have a lot more time to find "bargains" on Ebay or FB, and now I've got a Z1 project it's only getting worse, so all that money I'm saving on fuel, tolls, parking and food is only a pittance compared to what I'm spending on Z1 parts. Oh well, you gotta do what you gotta do. When I do go out, (once a week for physio) what pisses me off is that mostly Europeans and Asians have no understanding of, or interest in, "social distancing", and crowd me at the checkout in a supermarket, or post office etc. What I also don't like is the amount of folks wearing masks. Unlike in the US where one in 300 people have CV, in Oz it's only one in 3,500, so why the fcuk are so many folks wearing masks? Are they wearing masks because they don't want to get it, or do they have CV, in which case they shouldn't be outside anyway!

Anyway, I'm enjoying working from home, and I'm glad we can ride our bikes again without getting hassled, but I do feel sorry for folks who can't work from home, but can't go to work either. Hopefully this will be over sooner rather than later, but I don't think it will.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Terry..Guess it depends on the State here..but in Colorado (California also I've heard)..the way they've been enforcing the lock downs..now into phase 1 of 'opening-up'..is that the State Government (Dept of Public Health mainly) hires 'Corona Cops' or undercover people to go out and find places/businesses that are not enforcing strict 6 ft. social distancing..or everyone wearing face masks..then reporting back to the CDPH..which then levies a hefty fine on that business [one liquor store owner told me they were fined $1,000's for not keeping customers 6 ft. apart during check-out BTW].  But that's not the only example.  many other businesses have told me the same thing..in terms of fines..and the threat of fines if they don't comply with the State's mandates.

I'm not sure about Oz politics..but in the U.S. we call that sort of enforcement a 'Police State"..and it runs contrary to what most of us believe to be the way a democratic republic operates.

Just relating this here..not to downplay the seriousness of Corona virus as a public health issue (it is serious and requires prudent hygienic measures).  But seems to me that we all should be clear about what constitutes ensuring public health..and what constitutes an overly aggressive political stance by government.

My two cents..
Al/Ichi

Yeah mate, I understand the "Freedom" thing, but you guys are in deep sh1t. Ask Bobby Rohr how things are going in New York, with 1000 folks dying every day, and bodies being fork lifted into trucks and buried in parks because there's no room left in cemeteries. The fact is, there is no cure yet, not even a vaccine, so folks do need to be careful, and from what I've seen on Fox and NBC news, lots of folks are just ignoring the rules.

Don't get me wrong, there are just as many numbnuts on my side of the pond doing the wrong thing, but we've been very lucky with only around 7000 cases in all of Oz, and less than 100 deaths last time I checked. Everyone needs to do the right thing and treat this seriously, because if they don't, it's gonna get a lot worse.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I'm not sure about Oz politics..but in the U.S. we call that sort of enforcement a 'Police State"..and it runs contrary to what most of us believe to be the way a democratic republic operates.

Just for the record, and not trying to open a can of worms, but I've worked in a country that was a "Police State" and taking precautions such as enforcing social distancing and face masks is not anywhere close to a "Police State." If the US was a "Police State" it would be arresting or shooting people who disobeyed or criticized the state. It certainly would not be allowing protesters armed to the teeth to occupy capital buildings. As it is, very few people are getting tickets for disobeying these common sense precautions. There are a bunch of people screaming about "their rights" but very few are acknowledging their responsibilities.

Rather, the reaction to these restrictions has now been split down ideological lines (not, as some on the right like to claim, class/economic lines). The far right is against them, the left is for them -- generalizing of course, as a majority of Americans still feel that C19 is a threat. A month ago that opinion was shared by a vast majority of members of both parties, but coalitions of people -- antivaxxers, racists (some with swastika and confederate flags), gun rights advocates -- have arisen and mounted online and in-person campaigns against social distancing and closures. Politicians, such as Georgia's Brian Kemp, are touting reopening and were slow to close not for the economic impact of most working class people, but because if businesses are not required to be closed, the state is not required to pay unemployment if workers refuse to return to a business because they are scared to do so. It should also be noted that Georgia drastically reduced its budget for unemployment, I think it was last year. There is also the discussion that some people who are demanding reopening are doing so not so that they can go back to work, but so that they can return to getting the services they want. Although some barbers have opened up, for example -- and some have been fined, but some have also caught C19 -- many do not want to open because it is a high-risk business.

Time will tell, of course. Many people who were against closures cited Sweden as an example, as Sweden mostly stayed open, such as Kentucky's Rand Paul (ignoring, of course, Sweden's universal health care and better preparedness and reaction to the virus). Sweden, however, published a report last week in which it expressed regret at its reaction as, compared to its Scandinavian neighbors (the most apt comparison) it has seen a significant rise in its death rate compared to a normal year (30%). Sweden's neighbors, with stricter measures, have not seen any significant rise. It should also be noted that Sweden and other countries are providing much more thorough relief than the US is doing, such as salary payments. A $1200 check really isn't much for someone expected to stay home from work for a couple months.
